Got some great advice building a 1500 point list around my Malanthropes.
My group has an 1850-point tournament coming up in early December. It's a ways off but I want to be as prepared as possible and need your experience and advice. Forge World models and units (Non-gargantuan and non-super heavy) are allowed.
I expect the same players to show this tournament as the one held in August. First place went to an experienced Space Wolves player with Long Fang spam. Second place was nothing fancy Orks. There will also be Tau, Blood Angels allied with Grey Knights, Imperial Guard Basilisk and Vet Spam, Imperial Guard Executioner and Vet Spam, vanilla Marines, Chaos Space Marines (of course), and possibly Chaos Daemons and/or Eldar. Surprisingly only the Blood Angels player is experimenting with Allies. It's possible that the Ork player will go Chaos Space Marines instead as he's building that force right now.
All armies except Orks and 'nilla Marines are capable of fielding flyers but only the Tau player can really spam them. Both IG players can field Hydras. Only the Blood Angels player has access to Defense Line as far as I know.
Expanding my 1500 point Malanthrope list, I've come up with these three choices:
List 1: MC Heavy
== HQ ==
Malanthrope Brood (3) = 330 pts. Warlord
Hive Tyrant (1) - Twin-Linked Devourer - Brainleech Worms, Twin-Linked Devourer - Brainleech Worms, Wings, Paroxysm, Leech Essence, Hive Commander = 285 pts.
== Elites ==
Hive Guard Brood (2) = 100 pts.
Hive Guard Brood (2) = 100 pts.
Hive Guard Brood (2) = 100 pts.
== Troops ==
Tervigon (1) - Scything Talons, Stinger Salvo, AG, Toxin Sacs, Cat, Onslaught = 215 pts.
Tervigon (1) - Scything Talons, Stinger Salvo, AG, Toxin Sacs, Cat, Onslaught = 215 pts.
Termagant Brood (10) - Fleshborer = 50 pts.
Termagant Brood (11) - Fleshborer = 55 pts.
== Heavy Support ==
Trygon (1) - Instinctive Behaviour - Feed = 200 pts.
Trygon (1) - Instinctive Behaviour - Feed = 200 pts.
== Total ==
1850 pts.
Pretty straight forward. Eight Monstrous Creatures with lots of T6 (and T5 on the Malanthropes). Malanthropes assault down the appropriate flank. Tervigon hold the center and advance on strategic objectives. Flyrant Zooms and Trygon Deep Strike. One Tervigon can outflank if strategy dictates.
List 2: Balance
== HQ ==
Malanthrope Brood (3) = 330 pts. Warlord
Hive Tyrant (1) - Twin-Linked Devourer - Brainleech Worms, Twin-Linked Devourer - Brainleech Worms, Wings, Paroxysm, Leech Essence, Hive Commander = 285 pts.
== Elites ==
Hive Guard Brood (3) = 150 pts.
Hive Guard Brood (3) = 150 pts.
Doom Of Malan'tai Brood (130 pts.)
Doom Of Malan'tai (1) = 90 pts.
Mycetic Spore (1) = 40 pts.
== Troops ==
Tervigon (1) - Scything Talons, Stinger Salvo, AG, Toxin Sacs, Cat, Onslaught = 215 pts.
Tervigon (1) - Scything Talons, Stinger Salvo, AG, Toxin Sacs, Cat, Onslaught = 215 pts.
Termagant Brood (10) - Fleshborer = 50 pts.
Termagant Brood (10) - Fleshborer = 50 pts.
== Fast Attack ==
Gargoyle Brood (23) - AG, Toxin Sacs = 184 pts.
== Heavy Support ==
Biovore (1) = 45 pts.
Biovore (1) = 45 pts.
== Total ==
1849 pts.
This is meant to provide a balance of objective holding and challenging units as well as a balance of shooting and assaulting.
Gargoyles screen the Malanthropes and with 23 bodies should be able to get into assault themselves. Biovores thin down Ork and IG units. Flyrant gets into the backfield along with the DoM to create target priority issues. Tervigon anchor the middle and reach out to strategic objectives. One Tervigon can outflank if strategy dictates.
Option 3: Heavy Backfield
== HQ ==
Malanthrope Brood (3) = 330 pts. Warlord
Hive Tyrant (1) - Twin-Linked Devourer - Brainleech Worms, Twin-Linked Devourer - Brainleech Worms, Wings, Paroxysm, Leech Essence, Hive Commander = 285 pts.
== Elites ==
Hive Guard Brood (3) = 150 pts.
Hive Guard Brood (3) = 150 pts.
Doom Of Malan'tai Brood (130 pts.)
Doom Of Malan'tai (1) = 90 pts.
Mycetic Spore (1) = 40 pts.
== Troops ==
Tervigon (1) - Scything Talons, Stinger Salvo, AG, Toxin Sacs, Cat, Onslaught = 215 pts.
Tervigon (1) - Scything Talons, Stinger Salvo, AG, Toxin Sacs, Cat, Onslaught = 215 pts.
Termagant Brood (10) - Fleshborer = 50 pts.
Termagant Brood (10) - Fleshborer = 50 pts.
Termagant Brood (190 pts.)
Termagant (15) - Devourer = 150 pts.
Mycetic Spore (1) = 40 pts.
== Fast Attack ==
Gargoyle Brood (12) - Toxin Sacs = 84 pts.
== Total ==
1849 pts.
Biovores go and Gargoyles are thinned in favor of Spore-deployed Devgaunts. This puts three units into my opponent's deployment zone, each capable of popping transports/armor, taking down long fangs, or hammering infantry blobs and such. Gargoyles still screen Malanthropes. Doubtful a Tervigon would outflank.
Given the probable opponents, which list do you think has the best chance? Or, is there a direction you think is better?
