Moving to become a troops choice

I was chatting with some other 40k players the other day who were saying 'When I take X in my army list, it moves Y or Z to being a Troops choice instead of a fast attack or a heavy support'

Then they looked at me and asked what we got that did the same, opening more troops choices for us...and I said 'Well, if we take Termagants, we get a Tervigon as a troops choice' but it did get me thinking...haemonculus in DE lists make Wracks troop choices; Baron Sathonyx makes their Hellions troops...

It would, at least in my head, make sense that, if we took a flying tyrant, we could have gargoyles as troops choices or maybe even Shrikes...

Anyone else see any missed opportunities out there?

What you're suggesting was actually rampant when fake 5th edition tyranid codexes were getting leaked. I dunno why they didn't do that, would have made our army a lot more fun to play from a list building standpoint.

I don't know about making Troops of something (we have more than enough already). Though our Elites are clearly overloaded, so this could be useful.

Nice idea with Parasite.

p.s. OOE must have an ability to be chosen as HQ choice if there's no other one.

I sincerely hope that they make that true when our next dex comes out. They owe it to the Nid players, when they screwed us out of allies. It would certainly make more options fur us to go out and buy models, you know, their #1 priority...

OOE is HQ choice = Carnifexen as Troops might be a bit too "strong?", although, we DO currently get a tougher MC when we take Termigants...

Doom as HQ = Zoanthropes count as Heavy And Elites? Wouldn't THAT be something to see? A truly psychic onslaught! Almost as feared as mass Venom?

Parasite as Hq opening up Rippers as scoring would be pretty sweet. Would be better if it were Gargoyles too, and perhaps winged rippers, as well.

Deathleaper? I don't know... are we getting to the point of having too many HQ choices? Is there such a thing? Imagine Lictors as troops? Eeeesh. Only if they could be fielded in larger packs, llike Raveners, IMO.

Perhaps a Broodlord could be an HQ, and allow Ymgarls as Troops? HAH! In our dreams, right? Have sneaky Genestealers, like old times? You know back when CC was usable?

Broodlord will allow us take Genocult as troops. Nothing more.

Red terror as HQ, Raveners as troops.
Old one eye as HQ, fex's as elites.

Frankly if they brought back the red terror I might poop a hammer. I love that model.

Fexen as troops wouldn't be scary at all. We already take Tervigons as troops.

I can't really think of any that would work out other than Rippers being scoring. Gargoyles scoring would be far too good, and Ymgarls shouldn't need to score because Genestealers should still be good. None of the others really fit into any useful role as scoring.

Actually, what I would like to see is the Swarmlord get an ability that lets you bring an additional Ally-sized FoC (of Tyranids). Possibly also include it in the Hive Commander Tyrant optional ability. Essentially this would give us 1.5 FoCs from around 1000 points up, giving us much needed flexibility in list building, on par with the other armies.

Wait wait, there is no way anything like this will happen. Any of the good ideas you came up with. Just assume you will never see them. Because that would help nids. They like the fact that the only way we are competitive is if we cheez. They will never give us a balanced codex.

You guys have it all wrong. Tyrainds don't have HQ choices making Troop choices. We have Troop Choices making HQ choices into troop choices.
