Does leaving synapse instantly provide instinctive behavior?

"Feed" provides " rage", and I was tempted to charge hormagaunt out of synapse range to increase my charge attacks up to 2.

If they win combat, Awesome. If they lose, it's just hormagaunts, if they fail to sweep them up, next turn Ill be within synapse agian and auto-regroup, charge them in agian.

No, you check for Instinctive Behavior at the start of the movement phase, and it only applies if you fail the Ld test (you may not voluntarily fail it). If you are in Synapse range then Instinctive Behavior rule does not apply. A unit also does not make the IB test if it is engaged, falling back, or has gone to ground.

The only way to accomplish what you are trying to do is have the unit start the turn out of Synapse range, and fail the Ld test.

In my mind the synapse range needs to be a constantly in effect with the model for it to be enforced surely?

Much like a unit within 12" of a tyrant recieves a prefered enemy if equiped with old adversary and loses it if he is outside that range.
Is the same effect for ignoring instinctive behavior if your within 12", you don't get it, if your outside 12", do you get it?

No, like maine said you just have to test once per turn at the beginning of your movement phase for instinctive behaviour, when you're not in Synapse Range. If you pass that test you have no instinctive behaviour for the rest of the turn, and also not when you're assaulting. Only if you fail the Ld-test at the beginning of your movement phase your nids with IB-Feed have their rage.

Another question is the Fearless special rule. I do agree this only takes effect within 12" of a synapse creature, like with the I think its 6" of the Old Adversary. But thats not the same as the IB.

You do not have IB unless you start the turn out of synapse. Leaving synapse does nothing for you except make you lose fearless.

Unfortunately we cannot get IB:Feed with any degree of predictability. While it is no longer a penalty (and in fact a buff) it is not a buff you should ever count on or expect. The odds of passing that leadership test are not bad.

it is fairly likely to happen with hormagaunts, unfortunately hormies are also very likely to fail the very likely morale check they will have to face as soon as the opponent notices that they are out of synapse and thus a very juicy target (just shoot 25% of them down and you will have increased their distance to you by the killed models + a probably 2d6 fall back move)

There is still one downside to IB Feed, that is you can't shoot, which only affects a very few nid models. (mainly the trygon, all the others are either not used at all due to stupid pricing and general not-being-very-competitive-ness (fex, lictor) or will rarely see their shooting options being taken anyway, because of the price and comparative amount of potential uses of the options (raveners))

This is a matter of timing. Synapse is an ongoing effect that is applies as an instant effect - that is, it can apply or not at different times during a turn - you might start out of Synapse range, move into synapse range, then assault a target out of synapse range. What matters is whether it applies at the moment you are resolving a particular effect.

Instinctive Behavior is an ongoing rule which requires you to take and pass an Ld test or be subject to special effects for the turn. You cannot voluntarily fail this test. This test is taken at the start of the movement phase (so, before any movement). Being in Synapse range causes the Instinctive Behavior rule to 'not apply' - this means that, if at the moment you must take the test you are under the influence of Synapse, you do not take the test (and thus the IB special effects will not apply that turn).

Thus, to break it down:

- 'Instinctive Behavior: Feed' only applies if you are required to take the IB test, and you fail the test.
- You are required to take the test IF the model has the 'Instinctive Behavior' rule, and are not falling back, gone to ground, or engaged.
- You take all IB tests at the start of the movement phase
- Synapse negates the effect of Instinctive Behavior.

Thus, if at the start of the turn (before any movement or units arrive from reserve) a unit is in Synapse range, you do not take the test that turn, and IB can not apply for that turn.

Finally, if you have failed the test that turn and are under the influence of Feed or Lurk, but then enter Synapse range, the special effects of IB stop applying while you are in Synapse range. Thus you cannot benefit from both Rage (from Feed), and Fearless (from Synapse) at the same time.

I don't have.my book to double check, but I am pretty sure that last part is not true. I think if you are in IB, it is for the entire turn.

I do have my book to check, and that's correct. You check for IB at the start of the Movement Phase, and it applies for the whole Turn if failed, but the Fearless part of Synapse applies as long as the Unit is in Synapse Range at the time they need to test.

It's worded kind of awkwardly, but it does fall out like that when you break it down.
