What's the idea no. of gaunts in a brood?

I feel it's important to understand what role to take gaunts in.

Do you take 10 because they have expensive devourers for such a weak model, or maybe to unlock a tervigon as a troop choice?

Do you take 30 to swamp the enemy in tide of tooth and claws?

or is that too bunched up and you take around 20 being a better balance?

What's the idea no. of gaunts in a brood?

Depends on the rest of your army. 10 just for the terv is probably the most common, from what I see of lists.

There is no ideal number of gaunts in a brood.

The size of a gaunt brood dictates how it would best be used. For example, a large brood of 20-25 gaunts is hard to remove from the table. That makes it ideal for sitting on objectives and tar pitting units. It also makes the unit hard to maneuver and subject to more difficult terrain rolls than smaller units need to take. You also can't get as much cover, which makes enemy shooting more effective against larger broods.

On the other hand look at smaller broods of around 10. They are easily maneuverable and end up being faster than a large blob of gaunts. This also lets them use cover more effectively, meaning it will take more to kill a gaunt in a smaller brood than it would in a larger brood. That being said it is still very easy to wipe out a brood of 10 gaunts. There's also a distinct lack of firepower in a brood of ten gaunts. 20 gaunts attacking will be able to force some wounds due to volume of fire (or CC attacks), 10 gaunts won't be nearly as effective.



I think the best way to look at brood sizes is to look at what you want your gaunts to do, and then pick your brood sizes accordingly.

i tend to run two broods of 10-16. Generally to unlock tervis

I tend to run 15-20 devilgants in a spore. Since I only own one tervigon at this point I usually don't run another troop of gants.

10 to unlock Terv as a troops choice, 15 with Devourers in a Spore.

If I want a blob, i'll take Hormagants. Faster, more threatening, an actual threat in CC if they aren't blown off the board.

I usually go with 10-15 if I want basic Termagants to take a Tervigon as a troops choice. I usually start with 10 and top it up a bit if I have some points left over after building my list. If I'm putting them in a spore then I want 15 minimum. Maybe 20.

put it this way, when you deploy there shouldn't be an inch of unused space in your deployment zone.

10-15 basic ones to go and capture an objective and make Tervigons troop choices.

20+ for a horde running forward taking fire.

15 with devourers if you're spore podding them.
