Durable Nid Units.

Hello Hive,

If you had to make a list based just on Durability, what would be your unit selection and why?

If you can withstand torrents of fire and potentially hard to kill units such as flyers surely that puts you in good stead. The more you have left on the field turn 5 the better.
Durability can come in a few forms, hard to kill units, units that abuse wound allocation or just swamping the board with bodies.

So I ask you this Hive, for each FOC slot, what would you choose just based on Durability?

HQ: Swarmlord with 3 Tyrant guard
Troops: Tervigon or a Warrior squad with a prime
Elites:3 Hive guard
Fast attack: I would have to say a full ravener squad, lot of wounds always in cove if used properly. No grounding tests....
Heavy Suport: Full fex squad. I would say is our hardest to kill heavy support choice....

HQ - I would agree, Swarmlord, But I feel he would be more Durable with 1 Tyrant Guard + a Prime for wound allocation. Or without the Prime and just one guard with Iron Arm.

Troops - Agreed, Warriors with Prime would be the most durable I can think of, either that or a Tervigon.

Elites - HiveGuard because they have toughness 6 and 2 wounds? Would we consider 3 Zoans to be more durable?

Fast - Parasite or Mortex leading a Gargoyle squad?

Heavy - Tyranofex for the 2+/6 wounds, As we are not taking points into the equation, 3 Fex's wins this I think as you suggest above.

I would say that a shell tyrant with a couple of guard would be more resilient than the swarmlord because of the 2+, if you can roll iron arm then once you're down to 1 guard you get majority toughness of up to 9!

Warriors will eat krack missle spam, but with enough MC on the table hopefully attention will be drawn away, failing that use a regen prime to try to soak them up, however I have only ever regenerated a single wound, I never seem to do well with regen rolls

Raveners have a lot of wounds but will always wither to rapidfire bolters unless you can get good enough cover.

2-3 fexes with a prime and venomthrope in tow, gives you a reliable 3+/5++, majority toughness 6 and 11-15 wounds to play with

HQ: I dont know... swarmlord has psychic powers... Hive tyrant has armored shell... and Tyranid prime is a IC

Elite: Hive guard can hide and when they arent hidden completely have T6 and a 4+ save or 5+ cover.

Troops: For the cost, Tervigon. 100% Tervigon, actually, since there are many situations warriors lose their durability... 6 wound MC with Feel no pain guaranteed taking a chance and getting IWND as well or T7-9 is just fantastic. Coversaves are easy... its just a brilliant model altogether.

Fast Attack- Ummm


Heavy- Trygon (prime). 6 wounds and cover, make it a huge bullet magnet. Tfex is definately more durible, but it isnt something I would personally use. It is the most durable of them unless you count biovores out of LoS.

I actually have based my competetive 2k point list around pure durability, and being able to outlast in objective games. I use:
Flyrant with devourers
Shellrant with a guard, OA and TLDevs
3 Tervis with 3 powers each and tox/adrenal, one with claws
2x20 gants
10 gants
2x3 Hive Guard
2x Zoeys
2x Biovores

For most armies, it's too much T6 and too many wounds to put down in 7 turns, especially when you are forced to back away or be swallowed by the growing swarm. Kill Point games aren't as much fun, but I've found this works great for objectives. With psy powers theres aenough Iron Arm and Endurance flying around to mess with people.

I'm considering testing a durable list myself. My broodlord spam with double flyrants/harpy/trygon works great at 1500.
1750+ it lacks the durability to survive and deal with much more bullets.

so, from the advice above, considering trying something like this at 1850:

Swamlord+Guard
Prime with Lash/Bone (he goes with dakkafex's).

x2 Tervigon
2x 10x Termies

x3 Hive Guard

x7 Raveners

x3 Dakkafex.
