My group is working at the 1500 point level right now. Trying to build an all comers list that has muscle and speed, firepower and in-your-face close combat. Players seem to be having success with the Swarm Lord, especially given his improved psychic impact. Here are two lists I'm toying with:
List A:
== HQ ==
Swarmlord (1) = 280 pts.
== Elites ==
Hive Guard Brood (2) = 100 pts.
Zoanthrope Brood (2) = 120 pts.
Ymgarl Genestealer Brood (6) = 138 pts.
== Troops ==
Tervigon (1) - Scything Talons, Cluster Spines, AG, Toxin Sacs, Cat, Onslaught, Taken As Troops = 215 pts.
Termagant Brood (10) - Fleshborer = 50 pts.
Tyranid Warrior Brood (105 pts.)
Tyranid Warrior (2) - Devourer, Scything Talons = 60 pts.
Tyranid Warrior (1) - Venom Cannon, Scything Talons = 45 pts.
== Heavy Support ==
Trygon (1) - Instinctive Behaviour - Feed = 200 pts.
Trygon (1) - Instinctive Behaviour - Feed = 200 pts.
Biovore Brood (2) = 90 pts.
== Total ==
1498 pts.
The warriors are in the list to hold a rear objective especially as my opponents will often try to get behind my lines with scouts or other flanking/infiltrating units.
I opted for two Trygons over one Trygon Prime because I get the same firepower but (with successful reserve rolls) improved target priority issues.
Option B:
== HQ ==
Swarmlord (1) = 280 pts.
Hive Tyrant (1) - Twin-Linked Devourer - Brainleech Worms, Twin-Linked Devourer - Brainleech Worms, Wings, The Horror, Paroxysm, Hive Commander = 285 pts.
== Elites ==
Hive Guard Brood (2) = 100 pts.
Zoanthrope Brood (160 pts.)
Zoanthrope (2) = 120 pts.
Mycetic Spore (1) = 40 pts.
Hive Guard Brood (2) = 100 pts.
== Troops ==
Tervigon (1) - Scything Talons, Cluster Spines, AG, Toxic Miasma, Cat, Onslaught, Taken As Troops = 220 pts.
Termagant Brood (12) - Fleshborer = 60 pts.
Termagant Brood (190 pts.)
Termagant (15) - Devourer = 150 pts.
Mycetic Spore (1) = 40 pts.
== Fast Attack ==
Gargoyle Brood (15) - AG = 105 pts.
== Total ==
1500 pts.
Dropped the Trygons in favor of some fast flying goodness. Flyrant swoops up on the enemy. 'Gants sit on the home objective (if there is one) so Gargoyls screen the footsloggers. Zoans and Devgaunts in pods for some more targeting issues. A second brood of Hive Guard replace the Ymgarls.
A question I have regarding either list is how best to play the SL. Obviously strategy will rest in part on the psychic powers he rolls from the BRB. But assuming a worst case situation, is it best to hunker him down behind the Tervigon for cover? In 6th I'm playing Tervies very aggressively, running them up the board to get the Termagants in position to take objectives or tie up enemy units. The Swarmlord would be in tow lending his Swarm Leader buff to the Shooting phases.
I can field a second Tervigon, but at 1500 points I don't want to be "That guy who spammed Tervigons in a friendly match what a douche." I know, I know, two Tervigons isn't necessarily spam, but I'm waiting until we hit the 1850 level before I double up on them.
My opponents are mostly IG, vanilla marines, orks, and Tau.
Thoughts?
