I thought I'd share today's great game; we had a truly cinematic experience, due to some great terrain, custom rules, and light-hearted attitude.
Today my Ork buddy and I played a friendly and fun themed battle, where I set up the scenery as a walled city. In designing the battlefield, I started with a continuous fortification along the long table centre line.
The walls are a Russian-made fortress I have, with modular walls and towers. We play them as impassable 3+ from the outside, normal terrain (3" to climb up) from the inside; models can freely move between ramparts and towers.
Outside the city, the terrain is mostly my homemade clay forests, with a recycled card package as sand dunes, and a foamboard forest (with a snowman, my wife's contribution!)
Inside, the city is a Terraclips layout, with ramps to the walls, streets, buildings, and sewers. I generally stick to 2D+ design, so although there are 1st floor buildings and underground sewers, the game isn't on multiple layers
As I built it, various ideas came to mind:
1) A full width 3+ cover gives the defenders an advantage, so I decided all the city buildings would count as area terrain, allowing infiltrators and Ymgarls a good chance of sneaking in.
2) The sewers at each end were declared non-scatter deep-strike points.
3) I wanted walls broken, so the aging wall was given an armour value of 12, with each section of wall having 2 hull points.
4) in order to avoid a shooting match, multiple objectives were necessary, so we had 2 in each half, and a relic in the doorway that could be snatched, all 3 VPs.
