Falling back into synapse

If a unit, say Hormagaunts, has lost a moral check due to shooting and is falling back, and come within synapse (becomes fearless) do they stop immediately or do they do that in their next movement phase?

They auto rally, but you don't rally until your movement.

OTOH they are fearless, and gain all the other benefits immediately

They would auto-rally the next chance they have to rally. Normally this is at the start of the movement phase, but there are other rare cases where this happens (like someone assaulting the broken hormagaunts).

Also they will be useless next turn as a unit regrouping can not move or assault, and may only snap fire.

Of course this doesnt apply to space marines though....

Well you know Talonis, SM have the simple button. They need to be played easy otherwise SM players would complain they are too hard to play.

Why not move your Synapse forward to put them inside it before the Hormaguants turn to move? Remember, the rally check is made when their movement is done. So just do other unit's movements first, then since they've immediately auto-rallied due to Synapse...

Read Pg.31 again. Units test to Regroup right before they Move.

And the restrictions on them after regrouping are seriously harsh, even if they auto-rally.

What do you mean, Westrider? It doesn't say "before the Movement Phase", it says right before they move. Just like in 5th edition, you can move other units first, then decide to move your unit that is falling back - and then you make the check at that point.

In 4th ed, you had to make fallback moves with all the other "involuntary movement" at the very beginning of the Movement Phase. In 5th edition, they dropped that bit and didn't bring it back in 6th. It is a very common mistake made by those who learned it worked that way since 2nd? or 3rd? But changed in 5th.

Now things get really tricky

Fearless makes it so you will automatically pass the REGROUP test but you will still be subject to all the downsides of having REGROUPED that turn.

The big rule book does not say anything about RALLYING. RALLY is no longer a key term and the codex doesn't define it. If it did then the hormis would RALLY before they have to take the REGROUP test and wouldn't be subject to all the downsides because they were already good to go. But since it isn't there, that sentence in the codex does nothing unless you make the assumption that RALLY means they are no longer retreating but is still different from REGROUP. If you assume RALLY means the same thing as REGROUP then you are still subject to all the downsides so the point is moot.

Basically, as usual, WestRider is right.
