For 160 points you get:
A Flying Monstrous Creature.
It comes loaded with a Twin linked Stranglethorn Cannon. 36 Inch range, Str 6 rerollable large blast. AP4.
Str6 + Enfeeble is pretty nasty to anything T4 causing ID wounds. Think of a bunch of these shooting Wraiths, Oblits, Zeench Flamers, Paladins.. Naked it removes Guard/horde pretty nicely.
Ontop of that it has Pinning. Failed tests means your Target can only fire Snapshots and not move next turn as they Go to Ground.
It has a few cool abilities in addition:
Sonic Screech
-This may not sound impressive at first glance. Thanks for the assault grenades, when am i going to ever charge my Harpy?
It becomes more useful in 6'th now I feel what with overwatch because potentially you could use him to soak up some overwatch.
The additonal part of Sonic Screech allows you to halve the initiative of your opponents unit, Unit? Awesome.
So this could be useful for getting those Trygons to slap say Draigo before he attacks back for example.
Spore Mine Cysts
-Not that impressive at first right?
Yeah, i thought so too. But could potentially be useful extra strike on an obtective your enemy is trying to hold late game.
Or perhaps blocking enemy movement which can buy you a turn. I see options available with this.
To summarise, there are some interesting uses for him and how he could aid you situationally against certain lists/missions.
For me it feels they need to be played more defensivley at least initially and use them as late game objective contesting or even scoring in 1/6 missions. To ensure survival you could always swoop them off the table turn 4 and straight onto objectives turn 5.
Other downsides might be "but its awful with Vector Strikes". But who really is successful with Vector Strikes? It's certainly not something you should be relying on, look at the odds.
The other possible concern is Synapse.
He has LD 10 and won't be failing his Lurk test very often.
Even if he fails you still fire at closest enemy if you have line of sight.
I hear you say, but what about my horde of Termagants?
I fully see he isn't for every list but I do think you can overlook some optional play he could be used for.
Always nice to have options. Please feel free to reply and express your thoughts.
