2500 Necrons

Even though I started Necrons not that long ago, I am looking to take them to a tournament within the month. Here is the list I am looking at.

For those of you who frequent Necron Tomb World, I have the same list in a thread over there.

I realize I'm running heavy on HQ points (1190). The fact is most of those points are upgrades for the other squads (and most of my royal court members are becoming Ever-living scoring units), and the points are totally worth it for most of them.

This list gives me a rediculus number of gauss shots a turn, meaning even the most heavily meched out list will run into problems. Bonus points is that massed fire like this list can provide doubles for excellent anti-infantry.

Every non-deathmark unit has MSS and a warscythe. Peanut butter, meet jelly.

I'm not too worried about flyers. between my large volume of gauss fire and my night scythes, I have plenty of answers.

1: you start the game with a ghost ark, a 15 man warrior squad, and a monolith on the table
(possibly 2 deathmarks too). Even with pulse im not sure how you expect them to live until turn 2-3 vs 2500 points. Especially if you go 2nd. A guard, Shooty SW, DE, or another cron army could shoot you off the table with little or no problem. If you have nothing on the board, you lose.

2: You are depending entirely on your scythe squads to kill vehicles. Nothing else is going to be able to get close enough.

3: deathmarks are great, but the abyssal staff requires a direct hit to get good effect. You are putting a lot of points on that chance.

the list is too bipolar. You have very little to counter assault (MSS and field dont counter th/ss termies, nob mobs, or pretty much any dedicated assault squad) and you have half your army that has no way to get close. One half of your army gets shot to death while the other half waits, then the other half comes on, drops, and gets assaulted or gunned down. You dont have target saturation with only 2 flying squads and then 1 of each other unit. `

The Surflords also start on the board. The only units that must start off the board are the two Immortal squads in scythes. The monolith will also start in reserve most games, but that is mostly because I want to get it to the center of the board asap and 6" a turn will take it a while to get there. My counter assault plan is thin them out before they can assault, then between overwatch, Lightning Fields, and lord in each squad, I typically don't have a problem actually winning combat, even with warriors.

The deathmark units are there specifically to deal with high durability units. Nothing will say "nice points bro" like dropping a pair of AP1 flamers that wound on 2s on a unit. Even termies don't take it very well. Then the rapid fire snipers get to have a little fun, even if its only AP5. Not even a 10 man Nob mob recovers well from just one of these attacks. The only unit I know of to not get severely crippled after this is a Draigowing. And even then, my sub-200 pt unit will do some major damage before being wiped out. I always position them so that they get minimal chance to not mess up a unit, short of a large scatter away from the target. A template is 8" range, so it actually isn't as bad as you think.

The only units in my list that doesn't pull anti-tank capabilities are the deathmarks. Every other unit has a high chance to wreck/explode a tank in a single round of fire at 24" (unless the crypteks explode them, then its 36").

Surf lords got significantly weaker since you can only perform a sweep in the movement phase so you cant turbo over units and sweep further than 10". Therefore, he hits turn 2 at best.
The 15 man warriors will either be ineffective until turn 2, or only minorly effective. Same with the ghost ark.
Deathmarks can shoot 1st turn if they deepstrike, but will be obliterated in return since they will be the only thing close.

Therefore you have no turn 1 shooting in 2500. While that can work, you have to hit REALLY hard with what survives. If you go 2nd, the enemy has 2 turns of shooting at your guys before the fliers and monolith comes on. In turn 1, you will lose 2 vehicles at a minimum. This is 2500 points, every army (even orks) have long range AT shooting. Turn 2 will pop night fighting, but you will still probably lose the other vehicle and have some significant damage on your warrior squads. The Lords are not impressive at all once out of their barge and will probably be ignored.

You then have to hope on the piecemeal of reserves. If 1 thing comes in from reserves, you stand a pretty decent chance of being left with only 1 or 2 things left on the board.

If you are running reserves, run no more that 1/3 of your army in reserve and dont depend on synergy from reserve (monolith tele warriors). Without bonuses you wont get them reliably when you need them.

Thank you for the input. I can better see where you are coming from now.

Yeah, the marks usually get blown off the map, but I don't mind them being glass cannons since:
1) They will draw fire, and have the survivability of a marine.

2) They are only there to melt any "super units" like deathstars and Nob Mobs. They aren't really that scary vs things like a platoon (where you would normally have things die in droves vs any wounds).

The monolith "disembark" I view as a bonus to a unit that does something else I wanted (large AV14 LoS blocking piece for the games I need it to start on the board that has ways to deal with multiple unit types). I'm mostly planning to have the Necron Warrior blob go no farther than mid-board if I can help it, I want them sitting back on objectives. The ark, on the other hand, I kitted out to be a quasi-tank. With AV13 and 4 HP, its actually a ton more durable than most vehicles, all it needed was some better guns (ie destructeks).

I'm not so worried about AT because my local meta has shifted to massed S6 fire over things like missile spam. With S6 being able to deal with a majority of transports, and the advent of the ADL with quad gun, people around here usually don't take much more hardcore. DE just happen to come with dark lances on things they were taking anyway (raiders).

Also keep in mind my meta has almost no experience vs crons in 6th. The only other guy at the shop that has crons never bothered to pick up the 6th ed rule book, and didn't get to play much in 5th. Only the 2 people I've play tested with have any idea what crons can do in 6th, and they both got tabled even after I asked them to specifically tailor against it. I think they are the only two that will bring more lascannons, just for if they face my AV13+.

Surflords might not be able to go as far anymore, but charging more than makes up for it. It can easily mop the floor with anything that doesn't have an invuln save, and even some that do. Sweep for 3 attacks, shoot for another 2 AP3 shots, then charge for d6 S6 HoW hits, MSS, and then if anything is still alive, 4 more attacks with a warscythe. That's a lot of pain in a single turn. Obviously TH/SS termies wouldn't do so bad vs it, but not too many others would be as keen to have this thing blow them over. AV13 at the start plus Jink save make it harder for them to deal with it right away, but I will agree, once the barge is gone, it loses a lot of killing ability.

I only just got some night scythes, haven't used them yet, but the rules for them are sick. Is it really that bad if I don't have a reserve bonus? 3+ means 2/3 times they will show up. Then again I normally don't reserve much.
