First 2000pt List!

Hey everyone! First time post on the forums. I have been looking around the "nets" for a fairly competitive army list for Tyranids and this is what I came up with. I actually don't have any models and was interested in building a giant swarm army. Thought I would run it by you guys before I started buy anything. Also I took advantage of the second force organization chart at 2000pts and above to get my HQ slots.

My Whole idea with the army is to have the Tervigons babysit a Termagant Brood on a objective point giving them FnP and his Toxin Sacs. He would also be pumping out more units to use as chaff. Also whenever someone decides to assault my Termagants on points they have their twin linked guns for a better chance to get overwatch shots. My Hormagaunts will be there to either swamp some important unit or go push others off objectives. I will put all the Tyranid Primes in the Hormagaunt unit for a very scary punch. I got that idea from how some people playing the old beast man codex in fantasy use to run giant "herds" with characters hidden it. When the assault came it would really mess up your day. Though I really don't know how well this would transfer to 40k. I thought it was a neat idea. lol ;D I will use the Tyranid Prime with the Bonesword & Whip to take down any particularly fast HQ models. The Hive Guard will be transports and low armour value killers and the Zoanthropes my main way to kill any AV14. I have the Hive Tyrant with wings to "try" and take out any flyers, but I really don't know how will it would work out.

not sure but i dont think you can have a tyrant with implant and regeneration and tyrants cant have 2 pairs of sything talons and wings cus if u want wings u can only have 1 pair of sything talons
you can only have 2 hq choices and you have 4
i would drop the spike rifles and take 1 brood of 20 with devourers in a mycetic spore, and a further 20 with flesh borers allowing you to have your 2 tervigons which will spawn more termagants
have either 1 brood of 2 hive guard, 2 zoanthropes and a doom of malan'tai in a mycetic spore or you could have 2 broods of 2 hive guard and ur doom of malan'tai in mycetic spore so it can suck the brains and souls of the enemy

My Hive Tyrant is correct, unless I am blind. It is all on page 86. You replace the bonesword & whip for a 2nd Scything Talon ( he comes default with one). I am not sure why he couldn't have regen or implants. It says "Take any of the following" above the point cost for both bio-morphs. Also I said before my list, I am using the new rules for army construction where if you are above 1999 pts for a list you get a second list to get more of each slot. All you have to do is make sure to fullfill the requirements of the first force organization chart (i.e. you need at least 1 HQ and 2 troops.)

I took the spike rifles for overwatch. Either my enemy will try to shoot me off a point or assult me. Since they will be fearless (assume they don't kill my synaspe creature), it will be pretty hard to shoot me off an objective. The fact that the guns are twin linked make is so I have a better chance of getting a 6 on 'To Hit'. With 5/6 of the games you now play are objective base, so might as well make a army asumming that. Thats why I didn't take them in the spores because I want them to camp.

I really wasn't sure what the normal build for the Hive Guard, so I just brought the max. I am curious on why only two. I really am looking for if you guys think my current build and what I am planning on using the units for will actually work. I appericate your respone ptsgpbk.

Every single bit of this post is wrong.

Tyrants can have wings and dual talons. The games workshop people who made the wings are just complete mororns.

At 2k points, you get an additional force org.

I don't know if you realize this or not, but you're running 4 HQ choices. Not that that's a problem since you get that second FOC at 2000 points, I just wanted to point that out.

This does bring up some interisting options. There are several creative ways to break up your elite choices in order to maximize their effectiveness. For example, you could break up your zoanthropes into individual models. This increases your synapes web and let's them target independently, plus and more than two wonunds delt to the unit are wasted. Or you could break up your hive guard into units of two. This will give you 4 units to shoot, which gives you much more flexibility in priortizing your shooting.

Yup! It my plan to put those Primes into the Hormaguant Brood for some added punch.

I like the idea. I just realized that if I don't have something near my Hive Guard then they will not be of much use. So I suppose I could keep a Zoanthrope to babysitt or drop something to bring something else to babysit. Thanks for the feed back!

The hive tyrant. Implant attack won't come up very often. Regen is dry expensive and won't come up almost equally so. You could easily drop then down and save (40?) points. I am not going to say talons are a bad option, they look cool and have a useful ability. Toxin sacs on the other hand I question their worth. It allows you to reroll 1's to wound against most enemies, adding maybe 1 kill vs non vehicles. Not impressive for 10 points. Plus, you always want to leave (win) combat with ememies on their assault phase so they can't shoot at you.

I believe you are thinking of spinefists. Generally, termagants shouldn't be caught in a possition where they should be using over watch, and if they are they are dead (without a Tervigon) over watch isn't that significant towards the game, even with twin linked. With most of the termagant options, you pay points to make them worse at doing damage. Fleshborers to keep then cheap (and bolt pistols into rear armor) or devours (increased range and the strength of 3 guys for the price of 2) are the usual options. I think it's 1-2 points... Which means 40-80 points spent for... Over watch...

The hormagaunts are pretty cumbersome. 30 guys, 10 will probably die to shooting and then you get into combat and now you have many that aren't getting into combat and waisting points on the excess. You will also likely wipe out a unit you charge right away... You don't want that since that point is rapid fire range. You can drop a few without Rusking much (most people go 15-20... More often 20) which saves you 60 points and makes you unit more effective.

Did you just put the talons on the Tervigon for the heck of it or was there a real reason? 10 points. And regen is expensive! It takes a lot of fire to down a Tervigon but your spending 50 points to make it so when they are at 1 wound left they MIGHT recover a wound. 50... Points.

Why do I keep bringing up how many points everything is that I feel your waisting? Because your army, for 2000 points, feels wry small and has few threats that your opponent will want to fire at. I'm concerned there isn't enough here to threaten the opponents position or the models that do are expensive and fragile. You can win with this list in objectively based games... Assuming your opponent doesn't assert total domination with their guns

If I may, I disagree with the notion that 30 hormagauants are cumbersome. I would love to take that many (currently I have 24 in my Brood). At thirty models, yes they will die quickly. However there should be more than enough left to get into C.C. Twenty four Hormagaunts charging (if they stay at full strenght) equals fourty two dice. Add another twenty four dice for charging. If you are out of Hive Control, then the number of dice changes to twenty four (Rage)! Can one say, "Please pass the bucket of dice over here!

As for my Termagants they are biomorphed with Devourers. Yes it is on the expensive side (points wise), however I do it for the same reason (buckets of dice rolls). One can not make all those saves.

24 hormagaunts charging is actually usually 72 dice. They have 2 base attacks plus a chare bonus. I'd call that overkill, because you reroll 1's to miss and you gave them poison for 4+ almost static wound.

Against marines, assuming you are a super pro and get them all into combat with none of them dying on the way, 36 hits and another 6 from the rerolls (reroll 12 of them)... 24 wounds and with that 7 marines would die. Out of a max 10 (they can take more but won't). Thing is they won't all get into combat and and you will get shot at. You DON'T want 7 kills on the charge. You want to lose some of them in that combat. You don't want them to die, because then you will lose more and won't get a chance to attack. Then you will get over watched... And then your gants will die and you might have killed one unit... Because there is such a thing as overkill.

you've never played horde I take it? It is EXTREMELY hard to get 30 models, not only close enough to attack, but to get all those models in range TO have their attacks be justifiable. Hormigaunts, like it or not, are not survivable enough to make a full squad of 30 worth while. Gaunts tend to die in droves, so the better option for them, is to send in smaller groups, that can tie up a unit in at least two turns of combat, or two or more units in one round of combat, then to have the one massive unit that has the possibility of killing one unit, but then will be cut down completely after the fact.

Yes, Iagree with you wisdomeyes1! My mistake on the dice you roll for charging (I was temporarily out of Synapse).

I usually back up my Hormagaunts with a brood of fifteen Genestealers. If my opponent kills my Hormagaunts, then the Genestealers are free to charge in and finish the job.

I game with both my sons. My older son plays Space Marines, Imperial Guard, and Orks. My younger son favors Chaos Space Marines (Iron Warriors) and Necrons. I need the Hormagaunts to destroy those pesky Necron Warriors (I hate Reanimation Protocals!0.

To Bloodborne, I have tried to take smaller Broods. I find they die just as easy with no troops left. My large Brood survive a little longer and allow my other Broods to take the fight to my opponent. However, I do see your point. Maybe I am using my smaller Broods the wrong way.

To wisdomeyes1, NO! I have never player Space Marine. I have always played Tyranids since 1988. I also play Eldar though not as much (five games). It is just how I have always played my Swarm.
