Do you think about Synapse during list-building?

While writing my 6th edition lists I've found that I barely even consider Synapse coverage any more. I tend to just take the units I want to field, and then hope that enough of them are Synapse creatures to meet the minimum requirements that the game will demand of me.

In 4th and 5th I would end up dutifully including extra Synapse nodes, even if there was a more effective unit to use in that slot, because the downside of IB was much nastier. Now it doesn't feel that way.

I've had a few close calls with morale tests (ie. Gargoyles or podded Hormies who are pressing up the board without Synapse support and take 25% shooting casualties, or objective-grabber Termagants who bail on the objective in favour of the nearest area terrain) but in general I'm finding that the maintenance of a reliable Synapse web is almost an afterthought in 6th edition.

Synapse is still important, hormagaunts and termagants still need that fearless, they fail their first LD test, its only 6. its very easy to overlook this. youve been lucky if you've passed your ld test for taking casualties against shooting.

The models I use usually don't care about synapse or at synapse themselves. Dual primes, tervigons, and trygons (who lately I have been using less of)

I have actively been trying to get my termagants OUT of synapse. I want to go to ground in area terrain for that 3+ coversave but I can't do that when I am fearless.

Anything that wants to shoot when it has rage, or wants to get close but is going to get shot at, wants synapse for the ability to shoot and fearless respectively. Usually not a big deal in most lists, but some lists just it's blatantly obvious based on the models presented that they will need synapse

I had a brood of Hormagaunts charge Mephiston. If they had synapse they could have tarpitted him and kept him safely out of the battle for likely the rest of the game. But they didn't have synapse, so they broke, ran, were caught, and got massacred. Doh.

My lists are notorious for being synapse light no matter the point value.

However, my lists dont tend to rely heavily on it. Most of my troops are Brood Lord Commandos. And normally the only thing I have that cares whether or not it is in synapse (assuming its not a synapse creature) is my Hive Guard.

This was the same for me in 5th ed. 6th ed its just.. easier.

I have played synapse light games and they never seem to go well for me. The games that go well I tend to take a lot of synapse to be honest. HT, Terv, War, Zops, and then fill in the rest with gaunts, stealers, and what ever else is needed to fight my current opponent. Never have any problems getting around the table quickly and they always do what I want them to. I just change how many and what synapse i take based on the points.

I tend to take 2 to 3 to start then 1 extra for every 2 non synapse units past 3. (Not counting stealers)

You don't have issues with losing 2-3 genestealers and worrying about moral?

I use a lack of synapse to my advantage with rear objective holding termagants. Get them into ruins and move the synapse away. Then if they get shot at, you can go to ground and get the 2+ cover save. You don't need to worry about losing 25% when you get a 2+ save, so the Ld6 isn't a problem. If you get assaulted, you're screwed, but if you're letting enemy units deal to you, then you're already screwed anyway.

I tend to run pretty Synapse-heavy in 6th, just because of what I'm taking anyhow: Tärvigons and 'Thropes to spam Psychic Powers, Primes as beatsticks, Tyrants as both, plus anti-Air/Mech Firepower. Usually ends up leaving me with a solid Synapse Web without even really trying.

Area terrain ruins? Because of not, its 3+

I am shocked no one has tried to correct me when I said "g2g in area terrain for a 3+". I was like "okay, bring on the question for the rule people missed!"

I'm pretty sure everyone knows about the extra +1 when going to ground in area terrain by now.

As far as Synapse, it's always something I look at, but I've found no need so far to add extra Synapse Creatures than I already have. Maybe once I get to larger point games it might become more of an issue.

Cant say iv ever really worried about it. It comes up. But its not easy to fail LD 10 against shooting assuming you survive at all. And if something can beat genestealers in combat badly enough to to make me worry.. well Iv already decided they are lost in that situation and have probably intentionally sacrificed them with the hope of softening whatever it was up..

Edit: Im not saying its the best idea. But iv never really had issues save for some growing pains when i first started using them. And on the synapse part. Even synapse light, 12 inches is a pretty big bubble (till it gets killed) as long as you place it right

I am acutely aware of my synapse when list building. I also try to make it durable and/or hard to get to. In 5th I ran only three synapse creatures: my ShellRant with a T.Guard, my Tyranid Prime who bro'd it up with a Dakkafex, and my Tervigon. Each synapse creature was individually difficult to get rid of, as I was clever about cover and 50% unit composition. Oh, and Genestealers are gravy.
