My List: 1999
HQ:
Hive Tyrant (wings, 2 TL Devs, HC) rolled Endurance and Life Leech
Tyranid Prime (LW&BS, Deathspitter, Regen)
Troops:
Tervigon (CC, Life Leech, Warpspeed) TS/AG
Tervigon (CC, Life Leech, Enfeeble) TS/AG
10 Termagants (devourers)
10 Termagants (devourers)
4 Warriors (Deathspitters, 2 Boneswords)
Elite:
Doom (Mycetic Spore)
8 Ymgarls
Heavy:
Trygon (TS)
Carnifex (2 TL Devs, Mycetic Spore)
So he won the rolloff to go first. We put out 12 pieces of terrain with a good mix of Ruins and hills, plus a few walls. He put his objective in a piece of terrain in the back Right corner of the board from me. His deployment zone was on my right. I put my Objective in the Left closest corner to me on the 2nd level of a ruin that blocked LOS. He deployed the 3 Chimeras on the table, in front of his area terrain containing the objective, with one of the units of troops deployed spread out in the terrain to block the Ymgarls. He also put the two psyfle dreads on the board closer to my side. He was trying to keep my objective in a cross fire. 2 Stormravens start in reserve loaded with the GKs.
I deployed one Tervigon hiding behind the ruin containing my objective, one set of devilgants holding the 3 levels of the ruin, the other 10 man devilgant squad out front at the 24" mark behind a wall but still in synapse and the Trygon in the back behind the Tervigon. The other Tervigon was on the other side of the board hiding in plain sight at the 24" mark getting ready to make a run for it. (Hive Tyrant, Doom, Devilfex Ymgarls & Prime+Warriors are in reserves with the Warrior unit outflanking)
We roll for objectives and mine is a Skyfire Nexus, and his gives +1 cover to a troop unit.
His warlord gets move through cover (one of the Brother Champions, and mine gets FNP within 3" of an objective -Flyrant)
I write down that the Ymgarls are going to come in on top of his objective.
Turn 1:
Tyranids Steal Initiative!!! Exciting turn where the lone Tervigon runs forward and hides behind a ruin in the middle of the board. This one has Warp Speed so I cast it as no one is within Life Leech range. I forget to make any Termagants.
IG move up a little and I lose two wounds on the Tervigon that's advancing from Psyfle Dread fire and Autocannon fire from the Chimeras.
Turn 2:
Tyranids - Thanks to Hive Commander, all of the Tyranid reinforcements arrive. The Carnifex scatters off the board but goes back into reserves. Hive Tyrant Deep Strikes behind one of the Psyfle dreads and wrecks it with shooting. Doom drops next to a Chimera and the Troop unit that got out last round to shoot. Soaks up a few lives (he is up to 8 at this point) The Mycetic Spore blows up the Chimera The Ymgarls appear and 2 cant be placed so they are destroyed. Warriors show up and I get to pick the side so I bring them in behind his objective to claim. They shoot at one of the Chimeras causing 2 hull points removed. Ymgarls charge the unit on the objective and lose 1 to overwatch. They cause 7 wounds, and the IG cannot consolidate back into combat. They lose morale and fall back within 1" of the board edge. Tervigon casts Warp Speed on himself and moves up into the ruins making 10 Gants. Gants Shoot at the troop unit that the Doom is working on. Tervigon holding my base makes 8 Termagants and burns out.
Grey Knights - Reinforcements Arrive
Because of the Astropath, both Stormravens fly onto the board. One heads for the Hive Tyrant on my side of the board and the other goes after the Tervigon closing in on his side of the board. Mindstrike missles on the Tervigon taking 2 wounds. Autocannon and Multimelta take the other two. Synaptic Feedback and other shooting takes out the 10 man Termagant squad next to the Tervigon on his side of the board. Psyfle Dread tries to shoot at the Doom, but Doom makes his Invulnerable save. Doom eats a few more guardsman from the 2 units near him now. Up to Str 10. Guardsman falling back regroup and shoot their flashlights at the Warriors, but they bounce off harmlessly. Stormraven knocks the Hive Tyrant out of the sky, but he only takes a single wound from shooting and a wound from the impact.
Turn 3: Tyranids take First Blood!!!
Tyranids - Carnifex and pod come in and land right behind the Stormraven and Chimera that just killed the Tervigon. The devilfex's Pod is closer to a troop unit so it kills a guardsman instead of shooting it's ripper tentacles at the Chimera. The Warriors shoot and wreck the Chimera next to the Devilfex, so the Devilfex unloads his brainleech worms on them and they all die or run off the board. Ymgarls eat the last of the Guardsman on the objective and then consolidate back into cover. Doom eats a couple more Guardsman and then Cataclysms the Psyfle Dread immobilizing it facing away from everything else. Doom loses 3 wounds to Cataclysm. Hive Tyrant pivots and swoops behind the Stormraven, but fails to glance it even once.
Grey Knights:
Both stormravens zoom off and head for my objective. His being successfully taken his only chance for success is to clear mine with his troops and send the gunships back to clear off his. Mindstrike missles lash out taking 2 wounds off the Tervigon. Then both multimeltas hit and take off a wound, finally the Autocannons finish off the Tervigon and the synaptic feedback kills all but 4 from the Spawned unit of Termagants and kills 9 Devilgants sitting on the objective. One lone Devilgant is on the 4th floor of the ruin and isn't within 3" of the objective on 2nd floor. 4 Remaining gants run off the board.
Turn 4:
Tyranids - Termagants all fail IB tests and therefore have to shoot at the Stormravens causing no damage. Hive Tyrant, Doom and Carnifex make a beeline for the Tyranid base to try and help. Hive Tyrant shoots at the Stormraven carrying the enemy warlord, but only causes a glance. Trygon rages but there is nothing to rage at. Tyranid Warriors and Ymgarls consolidate into Terrain. Claiming the enemy objective securely. All remaining Guardsmen are either shot down or assaulted.
Grey Knights - Both Stormravens head towards table edges in my corner, but the Grey Knight strike squads drop out of the gunships as they fly by. One unit has to take a dangerous terrain test due to scatter, and they lose a man. They look up to see the enraged Trygon glaring hungrily at them. The other unit lands in the open near the edge of the ruin. Clearly within sight of my objective, but also within sight of the Doom, Flyrant and a 10 man squad of Devilgants that just came back under synapse. The GKs near the Trygon shoot at the Trygon causing 3 wounds. The GKs in the open shoot their weapons at the Devilgants eyeing them hungrily. Stormravens fly off the board.
Turn 5
Tyranids - Hive Tyrant, Devilgants and Doom all make range to the GKs containing the enemy Warlord. Each one unloads their weapons into them, the Doom's Cataclysm causing the most damage with 4 dead GKs. However the GKs resolve is too strong and they hold their ground. The raging Trygon launches an assault on the other unit and shrugs off the Overwatch without taking a wound. GKs attempt Hammerhand but it fails to go off, however the Brotherhood Champion does get his to work.
I would like to break down this combat because it was really interesting with the 6th edition rules.
I declare assault and I'm 5" away. I have to assault the GKs over a low wall that counts as a piece of terrain. The GKs overwatch but fail to cause a wound. I roll 3d6 discarding the highest and roll two 1s and a 3. Fleet lets me re-roll and I get a total of 6 so I make the charge. I move into base contact and the Brotherhood Champion is the guy closest to me.
-Brotherhood Champion chooses his stance and he gets a I10 attack (hits and fails to wound)
-I10 Trygon does his HoW attack and causes a wound, but Brotherhood Champion saves.
-I6 The Halbers move up into base contact with the Trygon. They swing and fail to wound.
-I4 The Sword moves up but can't get into base so is on 2nd row. Hits & Wounds.
-I1 The Hammers move up but can't get into bse so are on 2nd row. Trygon goes at same time. We roll 8 Rage attacks on the Trygon. With the Trygon re-rolling to hit, I score 5 hits and 5 wounds. The Brother Champion who is base contact takes the first hit on his 4+ invulnerable, which he saves, however the next one neatly cleaves him in two. He uses his special ability to score a hit taking the Trygon down with him. This wasn't a challenge, just his special ability. So that's 2 wounds allocated. Since the Halberd GKs were the closest other models to the Trygon at this step, the other 3 wounds are allocated to them killing 3 of the 4 guys. Grey Knights consolidate 6 " towards my objective. Leaving 2 hammers, 1 halberd & 1 sword.
Grey Knights - Both units of Strike Squads move up into the ruins and run for the objective, claiming the Tyranid base. The Stormravens return from reserves and unload their payload on the Warriors and Prime holding the GK base. The warriors lose one of their unit, but thanks to 3+ cover he is their only casualty.
GAME ENDS on a 2
Victory conditions: TYRAINDS WIN!!
Grey Knights = 3points (Capturing the Tyranid Base)
Tyranids = 4 points (Capturing the Grey Knight base and First Blood)
Kill the Warlord = Tied
Linebreaker = Tied
Thoughts on the game. This is the first time I've played Warriors in a LONG time and outflanking them with the Prime was awesome. They brought serious firepower and were very durable under these circumstances. Devilfex with a pod did exactly what I wanted him to do. All three of my MCs rolled Life Leech and none of them got Iron Arm. Extra toughness is essential to the Tervigons living in the games that I've gotten it. Hive Tyrant being able to go from one end of the board to the other to help was great. Doom did a good job (not amazing, but also was a key player with Cataclysm). Tervigons were meh in this game, however since they drew so much fire the other units of the game were able to make it happen. I failed IB tests 2 rounds in a row with the lone Devilgant on the 4th level of the building. If I had passed, he could have moved down a level and contested the objective making it a major victory and not a minor one. The guy I played is a regular Tournament Player, but this was his first outing with IG allies. He usually brings an all GK list to tournaments. I'm happy to pull out a win on this one.
I would definitely run this list again. It's got great durability and hits hard.
