1k list and some noob questions

Hey guys. I'm fairly new to the hobby. I've never played a game but I've been lurking a lot of 40k forums. I bought a bunch of 2nd edition models on ebay for cheap and am in the process of painting them up. I'm calling them Splinter Fleet Grendel AKA the Pink Death.

A few questions:

1) What weapon is this: i.imgur.com/S1xFK.jpg? My Hive Tyrant and one of my warriors are carrying these.

2) Should I expect any issues playing with old models? I have an old HT, old Zoans (so silly looking ), old warriors and a few others that have since been updated. I'm thinking I'll be running the old HT as a prime.

3) I'd love input on my 1k list:

I see a mobile firebase with Vores, Zoans, Warriors + Prime screened by termies. One Commando squad goes with main force as a counter assault unit, one commando squard infiltrates to disrupt enemy lines along with the Ymgarls.

These are all models I already own.

4) To expand to 1500, I'm thinking of doing the following:

Lose 1 commando squad, add 1 Mawloc, add 2 195 pt Tervigons, add one more Zoan and fill the rest of the points out with more Termie meat shield and maybe regen on the prime.

Any thoughts?

5) What are your thoughts on assigning psyk disciplines to the Zoans and BLs?

1) That is an old school barbed strangler.
2) Old models are legit. I use my 2nd ed Tyrant as a Prime with his barbed strangler counting as a deathspitter.
3) I have had little help from the VC on my warriors, so that is kind of meh in my mind. I would go with another devourer for more fire power.
4) Not a fan of the Mawloc. Once he is tied up in combat he is worthless and dead.
5) I like my zoans with their basic psychic abilities. They are for tank hunting and marine killing. I haven't tried them in but 2 games though, so I am still testing them. I havent had any luck with switching out the BLs disciplines yet, so I can't speak to that.

Thanks for the input. I have two Warriors modeled w/ devourers and one with a barbed strangler. In the spirit of WYSIWYG I'd like to have the BS represent a different weapon. Is there are better choce than VC?

Regarding the Mawloc, I don't see him as a directly offensive unt. This army needs to slog across the board to attack. If the other guy sets up defensively, I see the Mawloc coming up and moving his guys around to break castle formations and then retreating or hanging low until late game objective contesting. I've never played the game, is this a viable use of 170 pts?

And I think the Mawloc concept is awesome; Tremors is a special movie to me.

3)I would make the zoeys 1 unit, and attach the prime. Put regen on Her. Mostly so she can take the missiles for the zoeys. Small arms fire and such has a small chance of recovery but the 10 points is worth it. The zoeys can all take different psychic powers.

Thinking about it... You could jut not attach the prime to them and roll biomancy on 1 zoanthrope, trying to get endurance. And if you don't get endurance, you always have smite to back you up, along with the prime still being allowed to join.

I would make the biovores 1 unit just to benefit from multiple barrage. Doesnt matter that suggificantly, so it's a matter of personal preference.

4) Mawlock *hisss* heh, go ahead and take him but magnitize it's head and talons so you can take it as a trygon/ Mawloc anytime you want to switch them. If you get 1 unit of 20
Gants, change them to 2 units of 10 for objective purposes.

@pumpkin: mawlocs har hit and run... Hard to get tied up in combat. That said, they are bad in combat for the most part, and their most appealing factor can only be used 2-3 times a game (2 safely, and now 3 if it wasn't already contesting an objective because 5/6 games won't care that it dies at the end)

5) as I said above, their base powers are likely better, with one of them you can exchange individually (there is no rule that says this, only a suggestion in the FAQ that says that zoanthropes are treated as separate psykers)

The only one I would PLAN for is biomancy. You can choose not I or chose different disciplines an choose how many of them exchange their powers and for which powers before the game starts after you know what your opponent is taking.

Pretty much, haha

You try to deal with auto correct and Itouchs zooming in automatically on every word you type... With no ability to zoom out, and constant crashing mid post. It is really very annoying. But I'm getting better, and hopefully will be able to afford a laptop soon. My job just doesn't pay enough for that :/
