hello tth, its been a long time, i got invited a bit randomly to a game this wednesday and as its been a few years since i played i was hoping for a little assistance with my army list, just to explain how long its been, i took up bugs at the end of 4th edition, i havent played more than a half a dozen games of 5th (all pre-5th 'nid faq), and yes i know 6th is on the way lol so yes we are playing 5th ed, heres what i have painted (or at least painted enough to use) 1 x flyrant 2 x carnifex (crushing claws) 1 x squad (4) shooty warriors (death spitters) 1 x squad genies (8) + brood lord 1 x squad (8) devilgaunts 1 x squad (16) hormies 1 x squad (4) cc warriors (rending claws) 2 x lictors 1 x pyrovore 1 x trygon unfortunately i never finished converting the hive guard, 4 of them would probably have been useful but nevermind, im just looking for something fairly fun and easy to keep track of, i expect to go up against a marine / ig army... so yeah, cheers for the help

I wish I could say otherwse but that's a really rough list for 6th, which is here. Snce I don't know what models you have I'll just go down the list and tell ya how each is generally perceived in 6th so far and what people put on them
Flyrant + twinlinked devourers is awesome right now. Many people use hive commander and/or Old advesary
Carnifex with crushing claws are severely overpriced, most people run carnifexen with TL devourers and drop them in spore pods
Warriors can be good but get IDd by str8, missile spam hurts them big. If you run them include a prime to take s8 hits and boost their ws/bs. Good option is to outflank them with hive commander. People generally give them deathspitters, lashwhip/bonesword or dual boneswords for cc
Genes took a hit not being able to assault out of reserve anymore but still good with broodlord being a psyker. Plan accordingly
Devgaunts are great but 8 is small, probably won't make it across the board. People like to drop broods of 15-20 in pods.
Hormagaunts should get toxin sacs and possibly adrenal glands if you expect lots of transports
Lictors are one of the least use units there are. Ive seen batreps where the nids had a couple lictors and still won but ive never seen lictors do much.
Pyrovores are universally held up as worst unit in the codex but ive seen them do damage. Problem is podding isnt an option if you take them and then you should take 2, no One is gonna let a single t4 heavy flamer walk across the board
Trygons are awesome

no i know its going to be tough but its what i've got, i have a couple more units that need painting but lets be honest everything has been packed away for ages and even before that it took me nearly 8 months just to find the time to paint a battleforce, so its not going to happen in time lol, we wont be playing 6th ed rules (only knew it was coming as i got the email, didnt realise it was selling) it'll be 5th ed, 3rd or 2nd ed were the other options for rules sets and as much as i enjoyed 2nd ed we just dont have the time for it anymore
i've come up with this, no lictors, no pyrovore
hive tyrant - wings / old adversary / (bonesword lashwhip talons he's gonna be right in there) - 255
4 x warriors - deathspitters - 140
4 x warriors - rending claws - 120
8 x devilgaunts - 80
16 x hormies - toxin sacs - 128
8 x genies + BL - scythe talons / adrenal glands - 217
2 x fex - claws / bio plasma - 410
1 x trygon prime - regen - 265
-1615
so yeah a little over, well i was surprised, could stand a trim, might just tell 'em to up the points limit so i can get the lictors in ha!

If I were you I'd drop the RC Warriors or give them boneswords, take genes with Toxin Sacs and run Carnifex with TL Devs. CC Carnifex are just plain bad, for what you're paying you can get 2 more Trygons that are faster, 2 more wounds lots more attacks, and with smash, hit just as hard. Plus they have some shooting and better initiative. CC Carnifexen are just really bad nowdays unfortunately.

i accept the fact carnies are bad, they were bad when the codex came out, and we all knew monstrous spearhead was just going to be a way to stop people whining and actually give them some use, but i had already bought them way before, i dont have (as much as i would have liked at the time) 2 more trygons, the list of miniatures i gave in the first post is not my percieved army list, its a complete list of my tyranid army minus a couple of bits that aren't painted or are still on their sprue as i never finished the army (and i really havent got the intention of expanding it now), this game is to be a one off, it may be another 2 or 3 years before i get the chance / time to do this again, i was never too fussed about how efficient my army was, it was just supposed to be fun,
but cheers for the input, i'll see how i do with chopping the list

Errr. "and yes I know 6th is on the way"
6th has been out for a few months now. And most of the units I considered bad last edition I would actually use now (like carnifex, because it is the only model save the tyrant that can take dual devourers, which are our best solution to fliers)
Similarly, hive guard have fallen out of favor because of the changes to transports making them so easy to kill, so there are almost no transports save fliers on the table.

Well, because I could choose to play second edition anytime I want, but the rules changed.
If it is "just between friends" then I don't understand the asking for advice on how to make the list better. The entire point of putting a list up online for C&C is to get feedback that will more effectively make it win more often than before. Casually, I don't understand why people care what we think "works better" if it is casual. If it is for fun an you are having no issues with anything, then you really aren't accomplishing anything.
Now, my post was solely about the fact it seemed you didn't think 6th edition was out at all, that it was "upcomming". It is clear you don't have any intention to ply 6th edition, and that is fine, you dont have to. I won't make you. no one else will either. But don't be surprised when everyone talks about 6th edition and what works competitively or to help win against certain lists that you are having trouble against... Because that is the only reason Internet forums like this even exist. It's not "super serious competitive one tracked minds" it's us trying to be helpful in the only way we know how.

Well as has been said, my army isnt the most fabity fab fab, and yes it is a freindly, would have been nice to think I had half a chance at winning though without having to come up with some daftly over the top tourney army though

Fine, I'll try to dig out my memories of 5th I have been trying to repress for the purposes of commenting and playing.
Why trygon prime? You have massive synapse bubbles as it is.
Do your friends mind that you have a unit of 8 gants when the minimum unit size is 10?
Is the genestealers unit 8 models or 9? Also, the talons and toxin are on the broodlord alone right?

cool
trygon prime, i was always told you could never have enough synapse, also shadow in the warp is a nice touch as i expect to be facing off against 2 or 3 psykers
2, no, well they havent complained yet, either way as i dont have min squad size painted i probably havent used them in battle before, obv i never checked in the codex how many were in a squad, so they can get chopped out to drop some points fairly easily
genies, 8 + brood lord so 9, i think, might have to count them again, but no talons and toxin were across the squad, hey, it sounded cool in the codex, rerolls on 1's and i've already forgot what the other thing does... so i take it thats not a good idea then :S

thank you, an interesting read and something to think about definitely
word has come through and apparently 1500 pts will be the limit, im thinking chop the devil gaunts and the broodlord and bobbins from the genies, just take 8 vanilla genies, then just take a trygon without prime
should leave me enough points to put the carnies in drop pods, might put me slightly over but i can negotiate that at the time
