New tyranid recruit

Hey all, I'm brand new to warhammer 40k. I collected some space marines back in high school 10 years ago and got the Battle for Maccrage set several years ago, but never played a game nor even learnt the rules.

Recently I've been reading a lot about it, watching battle reports etc and decided to go for it. After finally deciding to go with Tyranids, I bought their codex, ordered a battle force, and am now deciding what to buy for my 2000 point army over the next several months.

I'm after a nice balanced army, with plenty of different types of tyranids, that will be fun to play with and will win me some games (with practice). I know some people only get a couple of different broods and mass produce them for a highly efficient army, but to me that's boring and I want a wide variety of troops.

I've come up with an army list which I think looks cool and I *think* could do some damage. I'm after advice on any changes people would make. Don't worry too much about the upgrades, as they can change and I mainly need to know what models to buy.

I will primarily be learning and playing against my friend who has Necrons, but will seek out other challenges when I know what I'm doing. So without further adieu, here is my list:

You will want to drop the stranglewebs on the termagants, its practically useless, and add more gants, move that tervigon to the troops choice section, it can now hold objectives but you will have to drop a troops choice, i recommend the warriors as a single squad of 3 wont achieve much.

what are you planning on doing with that trygon? depending on its role, do you need the prime upgrade? biovores are good though not very effective againt marines etc.

elites look fine, deathleaper is a bit hit and miss but solid choices otherwise

depending on what game you play consider joining the gargoyle squads together, espcially if kill points. this is what i would do with this list but obviously you want it to look cool

So you're going for a balanced list. Nice. I like you already.
I am myself a big fan of non-spam-lists, but it's only fair to say that they are not the most competative builds for Nids to make. (but a lot more fun, IMO)

^ Milkybarnid has some very good points there, but the best thing you can do is playtest the army you have now.
Then, when you get the hang of it, start adding *only* one or two units. Repeat this for different units, using proxies.

You will find out what kind of style suits you best, and you have a better basis to decide what to buy.

As Milkybar said, I would drop the strangelweb on the gants, and ad Catalyst on the tervigon.

All Models in your list are good and can be used often, I see no reason that you should not bye them (:

I simply included the 3 warriors because I get them in the Battle Force (which should be arriving tomorrow ). I was aware of not being able to hold objectives with the Tervigon if he is a HQ, but I wanted to split my troops up into more units so there are more things to shoot at. Do you think that rather than dropping the warriors, I should merge either the gants or the stealers into a single unit to make room for the tervigon?

I decided to upgrade the Trygon to a prime for the better attack and synapse. Having never played a game, I have no idea how easy/hard it's going to be to keep all my units in synapse.

I chose Deathleaper cos he looks like he could be a lot of fun.

Lanesend - so far all I own is 10 gants and 6 stealers from the battle for maccrage set, and the Battle Force should be arriving tomorrow. Next in line is definitely the Hive Tyrant.

A tervigon can only hold objectives as long as its in the troops section, under the termagant entry there is the scuttling horde box, which allows you to purchase a tervigon as a troops choice , if it is in the HQ section then it cannot claim objectives.

A difficult decision to make on what to drop/combine, based on what you have said i would combine the genestealer squads, the tervigon will be spawning more termagants (I assume) which looks great on the board when there are multiple broods of gants barring down on your opponent you dont have to move the tervigon to troops. (also the gaunts that are spawned through the tervigon count as troops so a HQ tervigon can spawn objective claiming units )

If im honest, i do think the trygon prime looks a lot better than a normal one. As Lanesend has said playtest your army first

My battle force arrived today.... can't wait to get home from work
