List Writing in 6th

If your lists are all looking the same, that is more you than the codex. There are a ton of valid options at this point. I listed a whole bunch.

Take a prime with warriors
Take a prime with Fexes
try raveners
or gargs
or devilgaunts, in a pod maybe
or termagaunts to sit an objective or tarpit
try yealers
try Blord commando squads
DoM
PoM

dude, there are a ton of valid options... you just need to be willing to try them.

Obviously I alter this slightly in that I sometimes run a dakka tyrant with armored shell and I change up the 3rd elite slot depending on what mood I'm in (or what models are broken). The problem for me with making my Tyranid lists is not that I don't find units "good", but if you start thinking about synergy and reliability the codex only allows a few good options (especially in the troops section, I find that two tervi's is about the only way I feel like my troops really have an impact on the game other than camping an objective).

I started trying to come up with a list yesterday that would be somewhat of an alpha strike, but with a beta strike in there as well. I essentially thought that if I drop enough big stuff in the enemies' lines that some stuff would be able to walk across taking only a little damage during the first turn and I ended back up at the list above.

I guess its 'out of the box' for me. I feel like if I stepped this up to 2500, I'd add another fex and maybe the parasite...Thanks for the input so far. If you read over my other list and that gives you any thoughts I'd be happy to hear them.

@ the prime supporters: As a long time nid player, I am not a huge fan of the prime. Hive tyrant's are da biggest and da strongest HQ's...just kidding. But seriously, I've never had much luck with the prime...I thought about running him with dakka fexes, but I just don't see it working much better than just 2 fexxes...what type of combos do you find the most effective as I've never had him come close to getting his points back?

Then don't use plaguebearers, they won't get there points back either.

The prime isn't a huge killing machine like the hie tyrant. The prime is a support role, mixed with above average close combat skills (with a 15 point upgrade )

The prime with a pair of devil fexen is suggificantly better than just devil fexen. With the prime, it takes 7 unsaved wounds from passed look out sir! Rolls to kill 1 fex, where without the prime, it only takes 4 (assuming all look out sir rolls passed and the prime don't chose to take any wounds of its own)

The prime with zoanthrope, venomthrope, an awarriors means that your s8 problem is less worrisome, you have a t5 model to take the wounds for you, and to continue to play allocation games with those multi wound models she is with.

The prime with gants honestly uses the gants to support the prime.

Now look at the tyranid primes stats, look at the hive tyrants stats. The tyranid prime is very little short of a tyrant. With a lash whip, a bone sword, and maybe poison, you can effectively do what a tyrant does in close combat.

I used a lot of unusual lists involving Lictors. It was all in last edition ( Although most of my lists have remained the same)

I don't understand what you mean by "shielding spores"

My friend made a list consisting of 9 hive guard, 9 biovore, and tyranid warriors in spores (which was before the FAQ took away the primes ability to ride in one). It was pretty mean, popping 3 transports a turn and killing all tr infantry in sight (or out of it for that matter ^_^)

I've used 2 Tfexes and 4 Hive Guard with 3 biovores and a Stranglethorn Cannon Tyrant before with a similar idea. Open transports, then large blast the contents. It works very well because the Tyrant and Fexes were all 2+ armor, the Hive Guard could be out of LOS, and still shoot, and the Biovores could be outside LOS as well. It's not as good as Tau or Imperial Guard shooting, but it's resiliant as heck.

We don't kill as much, but don't get killed as much either....

I'd say be creative. I've played silly lists just once to try them out. Like, a Deathleaper list full of Devourers, Broodlords, and a DoM to make for lots of failed leadership tests.

I lost, but it's the fun that matters.
