Bring Additional Terrain to the Games?

Hey all,

the discussion about Ymgarl Genestealers made me think about the new terrain rules and how they will be realized.

In general, there is not enough terrain on the boards, because making and storing terrain is effort.

When you are going to have a game on a board that has less terrain than demanded by the rules, would it be ok to insist on adding terrain?

I am thinking of making dedicated Hive-Fleet-Depletor-Terrain, 2-3 pieces with the area of 1-2 CDs each, samer base design, tyranid stuff on it.

What do you think?

I dont see why not, especially if you are going to bring your own. GW recommends a certain amount of terrain in the rulebook, but I dont have that with me atm.

I think people like dedicated terrain, but your right about it being a hastle. I would think bringing your own would be a nice gesture and help to make sure you have enough on the table.

I rather like the new terrain rules. It says to place d3 pieces per 2x2 section of the game board. It makes for very randomly generated terrain with some areas being more dense than others. The potential to have far more than 25% of The board covered is definitely there.

My usual Opponent and I have actually been cutting Terrain down from the BRB recommendations, because we've got a lot of big pieces, and when we actually follow their guidelines, we end up with chunks of the table so terrain-dense that they're not really usable.

They are not overly clear about what a 'substantial' piece of terrain looks like, or how big it is.

They mention 'like a building, forest, or ruin', but that leaves just a bit of leeway.... buildings come in small medium and large 6x6, 9x9, 12x12.

I bring several pieces of foam board terrain with me. They are 2" thick and cut in different shapes. I fight a lot of shooty armies, and a lot of time my terrain is the only LOS blocking terrain on the board.

Really? I've played on some incredibly dense boards before and found that it makes games pretty darn fun. One guy had a chimera heavy army (about 8-10 of them) and he ended up doing some crazy things involving roadblocking and sending smaller units through hidden passages and the like.

Eh. I prefer spending more time actually playing the Game than trying to figure out how to measure the move for Models in the midst of sprawling ruins under three levels of overhang. Especially when you're trying to work out who's actually involved in an Assault or something.

It's a function of the specific Terrain we've got, I'll grant you that, but it's still frustrating.

The new rulebook has nice rules about terrain density--so anyone yelling "cheese, you're bringing your own terrain" should be shot down easy enough with a "I'm just doing what the rulebook requires".

We used to have a Warhammer fantasy player near us who played Dwarf gunline who would bring his own hills--2 of them--and plunk one in each deployment zone. That was a bit more problematic and beardy. Heh.
