Battlefield
Battlefield had a few ruined building and a single mysterious forest.
Battle
We rolled up Crusade with 3 objective, which we placed in a diagonal line across the centre of the board. We then rolled up vanguard and decided that the objectives would all be in no-mans land
Warlord traits
My tyrant rolled up “Master of defence”, The librarian rolled “Strategic Genius”, so both traits were useless
Psychic powers
The librarian took Avenger and null zone
I rolled up enfeeble, which I took. Followed by haemorrhage, which I swapped for smite.
Deployment
The terminators went on the right, with the missile squad next to them (squad 1). Then came the Venerable dread, a Hvy bolter tactical squad (squad 2), with librarian, the normal dread and then the final tactical squad (squad 3).
I deployed back behind a termagant screen, partially hidden in a graveyard. My Hormagaunts took my left flank behind the screen. Whilst the stealers took the center. The warriors took the right, bubble wrapped in gargoyles and finally the tyrant and harpy hid behind some ruins.
Turn 1
Marines
Three of the Planetary Governor’s daughters had run off in a panic as the invasion had begun. They had taken precious archeotech tech with them. The Governor had pleaded with the astartes to bring them back safely. Espistolary Bob agreed to find the daughters, honour bound by ancient oaths to the ruling family of the doomed planet
The marines moved forwards quickly, as they ran forwards to form defensive perimeters around the mortal women. Auspex readings quickly located all three. One had hidden herself in a forest, a second in a ruined building and the third had given up all hope and had collapsed in a sobbing heap in the open.
Behind the tactical armoured brethren, the two ancients slowly lumbered forwards at a slower pace. Venerable Philip’s augers locked onto movement in a nearby graveyard and he open fire at extreme range. Bolter shells tore apart gravestones forcing a Termagant out of hiding, which was quickly vaporised by a single blast from his multimelta.
Tyranids
With ear piercing shrikes The Tyrant and Harpy leapt skywards their giant pinions beating the air to gain altitude, before they swept forwards towards the interlopers. The rest of the brood surged forwards. Nimble moving through the ruins.
The tyrant spied the rightmost tactical squad and let lose a hail of brainleech worms. Its keen mind allowing it to direct the short lived creatures to the three most dangerous threats in the enemy brood, felling the flame-spouter and brood leader beast, as well as 4 other brood members.
The Harpy fired off a Strangle thorn at the librarians squad and two were ripped apart by the short lived vines, before it flowered and died.
Turn 2
Marines
Blooded but unbowed the marines continued their advance and managed. Tactical Squad 1 pussed through the dense foliage of the forest noting, from their hypno-docrination botany lessons, that the forest was made up of Cerebrumium Imperium aboris otherwise known as the Brainleaf frond and they were in flower.
The central squad quickly surrounded the crying prince in the open, and the blooded squad 3 climbed through the ruins to reach the final princess.
All three squads were somewhat put out when they saw that the areotech were nothing more than fancy gold rings. This aura of miffness was soon replaced as all three turned out to be powerful grav wave generators.
Squad 2 then decided to show their manly-plus-ness to the princess and shot apart the approaching Termagant brood killing 7 of them.
Both Dreadnaughts showed that being hundreds of years old doesn’t make you a tactical genius as they both shot in the general direction of the flying tyrant, upwards.
Brother Dereck then demonstrated why you shouldn’t stand in a patch of Cerebrumium Imperium aboris as he attempted to punch brother Frank. Brother Frank ignored him
Tyranids
The tyrant sent a pulse of psychic energy out to an orbiting spawn ship and was rewarded as a mycetic spore crashed into the ground behind squad 2 and the dreadnaught, disgorging a brood of devilganuts. The tyrant then tilted its wings to swoop round towards the newly arrived brood, to help guide their aim.
The Harpy dived low and took the heads off of two of the prey-things in the central brood. The rest of the swarm moved towards the two central enemy brood ready to kill the leader beast it hid. The Hormagaunts however, were sent to deal with the undamaged brood hiding in the forest, and to bring back samples of the interesting trees when they were done.
The Mycetic spore, hungry after its hard work of falling under the infulance of gravity reached out and tore the back armour plate of off the walking metal thing next to it and chewed thoughtfully. The tyrant took advantage of this newly developed weakness in the enemy that had shot him and filled the back of the walker with brainleech worms. Shredding whatever it was.
Bereaved of the target they had been spawned to kill the devilgaunts turned their guns on the ruined squad in the ruins and destroyed them all. Though the small norn queen they were defending managed to avoid being wounded.
The Harpy prepared to fire at the central enemy brood, knowing that a scatter would kill others of its own swarm. Just before it fired it checked with the hive mind and realised that it didn’t have to fire at a brood it had swatted at whilst flying over, so it fired a salvo of barded stingers into the back of the second enemy fex-thing, damaging its back armour.
The gargoyles prepared to charge the enemy brood in the open, ready to take the fire to allow the stealers to reach the prey without injury. However one was set on fire and the gravity seemed all wrong so they stayed where they were.
The stealers saw that the Gargoyles were not charging, so decided that they shouldn’t either.
The hormagaunts decided to show them how it was done, until one was shot by the nemy brood in the wound and decided they wouldn’t move either. Testing the theory that marines eyesight is based on movement
Turn 3
Marines
Espistolary Bob thanked the Emperor for the Grav wave generator and almost gave the princess a hug of thanks, before remembering that a similar incident 100 years ago had lead to a very thin and dead princess and their honour oath. Instead he took the squad back away from the princess to engage the devilgaunts that had killed third squad.
Venerable Philip stomped towards the stealers and cycled up his weapons, whilst the terminators charged prepared to charge the hormigaunts, once first squad softened them up a bit. Which they did killing 3 of them.
Philip’s shooting saw two of the stealers blasted into gratifying small pieces.
Mean while bob and his squad fired at the nicely bunched devilgaunts. Alas they were too far away for his magical powers and the squads flamer to have much impact, since they were wary of approaching the ruined form of ancient Steve. He was grouchy when the dreadnaught worked properly. However they were still able to kill 2/3s of the brood.
Meanly the elite warriors of first company smashed into the brood scythed limbed hormagaunts and straight out of the other side. Their amour covered in alien blood. Seeing the few remaining run, outside of the comfort of the hivemind they started high-fiving each other.
Tyranids
The tyrant swept around behind the enemies lines, whilst the harpy dived through the enemy hiding in the woods, carving Brother Stan and a tree in half.
The rest of the swarm moved as close as possible, ready to charge through the gravity anomalies.
Deciding that the metal plate wasn’t tasty the spore reached out again for some more food. This time finding and eating brother sergeant Gareth. The tyrant fired into the back of the remaining walker, wrecking it three times over.
The harpy fired at the terminators, turning one of them into compost for a stranglethorn bush.
The warriors, who up until now felt left out, gargoyles and devil gaunts fired at the central enemy brood and killed several of them.
Then the stealers charged the terminators and the gargoyles charged the central squad
The stealers managed to fell one of their foe, for the loose of 3 of their own. The Gargoyles faired better, losing only 2, for the lost of one.
Turn 4
Marines
The unengaged tactical squad fire at the tyrant, but all their shots go wide.
In combat the librarian is left with one brother, and fell one gargoyle in return.
The stealer terminator combat turns into a slapping match and no terminators and only a single stealer are killed.
Tyranids
The tyrant tries to enfeeble the terminators, to stop them from charging the warriors, after they kill the stealers, but they ignore him. So he flies over the tactical squad in the forest and shoots them, killing 2.
The harpy tries to join in but misses. The warriors finally get to shoot their guns and kill a single marine.
The devilgaunts advance and try to block the terminators approach to the warriors, but don’t run far enough.
Unsurprisingly the two stealers die to the terminators. In the gargoyle fight the librarian is left on his own
Turn 5
Marines
The terminators charge the devilgaunts, whilst the tactical squad shoot and kill a warrior.
The devilgaunts lose half their number whilst the librarian kills a gargoyle. Both units hold, due to the nearby warriors.
Tyranids
The tyrant lands so he can engage the remaning enemy brood, hiding in the forest, he shoots and kills all but the sergeant, which he charges. Smashing the opponent into pulp without raising a weapon.
The warriors charge the librarian and with 12 attacks hitting on 4s, wounded on 4s with a reroll they get one wounding hit.
The terminators lose one of their numbers and reduce the devilgaunts to one only little gaunt.
Turn 6
The two remaining terminators kill the last devilgaunt.
The warriors inflect 3 wounds on the librarian killing the enemy leader beast.
The terminators teleport out
Victory to the swarm
Both myself and my opponent thought I had the game in the bag as I tried to assault in turn 2. I had wiped out one troop choice and was going to hit a second with gargoyles and stealers and the third with a tarpit of toxigaunts, which would have whittled it down to a manageable level. This would have left him with
5 terminators
1 venerable dread
A depleted tactical squad
Vs most of my swarm.
However 3 Grav wave generators resulted in all of my charges failing. 1 due to be being out of range and two due to only one model being in charge range, and them being shot by overwatch.
The librarian in the tactical squad soaked a lot of damage from my shooting and assault, making the unit last a lot longer.
My flyrant was the star of the show. Killing one and a half tactical squads, two dreads and giving preferred enemy to my devilgaunt brood and spore at a crucial moment.
Stealer snad hormies did as expected when up against hammerators. Slowly them and only taking one or two down. I was starting to get worried, as all I had to throw at them were my Harpy, Tyrant and warriors, all of which wouldn’t enjoy the experience.
The Harpy is cool, but didn’t do much. It doesn’t have the firepower projection to deal much damage. I need to try it against softer enemies.
