Ymgarls not needed anymore

the reason we use ymgarls was to deal with backfield threats like looters and longfangs.

but now we have the flyrant which can pretty much shoot them up turn one and charge them turn two, it is much more reliable to use the flyrant and also saves us the points and one almost mandatory elite slot for something else. ymgarls aren't cheap at all.

How do you think about this possibility

The ability for me to use 2 foc at 2k is what is allowing me to use ymgarls again and I love it. I still think they have a place because it allows us to spring more at once on our enemys overwhelming them with targets they want to kill, mainly that hive tyrant that just earned her wings.

Ymgarls are nice, but it is not always effective when there is not enough area terrain to go around. I do like the flyrant, but the thing is that it will not always reach their back line right away. It usually takes me until turn two if I want to do that. For example I had a 1850 pt game yesterday against IG. On turn two I was able to move my flyrant into the enemies deployment zone and with my outflanking warriors coming in, not everyone was focused on my flyrant. Like swarm 492 said, I will probably start using ymgarls again at 2000 pts. Also I am starting to love using raveners with the flyrant since they can keep up and benefit from the synapse.

I expect Flak Missile Longfangs shooting down Flyrants in a couple of months, which would bring back a role for Ymgarls to fill.

but flak missiles are s7 AP 4 and has the rule where they can shoot bs 1 at land units am i correct? So i don't expect land units taking them. only vehicles.

Most people are saying they will be an additional upgrade to ML in the new codexes. So you can chose to shoot krak, frag or flak each turn.

Maybe thats a good thing, maybe its not.

On a plus side there might be less flyers going around but on the negatives our flyrant will still suck as much as in 5th edition.

How about Ymgarl are the only thing in our codex, and one of the very few things in the entire game that can assault out of reserves? That makes them unique.

WHAT? ymgarls have more of a place than they ever did before. Spamming anti-tank is no longer necessary for the time being and other outflankers/infiltrators cannot do what ymgarls do.

I include them more now because of the Flying Tyrant, they support eachother well. One tyrant alone does his job, but even more effectively when ymgarls pop out around him.

I never believed they were as good as regular genestealers, for the point cost and no poison i almost never fielded them. They got better because other stuff got worse.

Eh, I could never see Ymgarls being ditched. I have honestly never seen a situation where there wasn't enough terrain or a terrain piece was full, and I have seen MANY occasions where there's something inconvenient near it that just has to die, there and then.

Heck, with the new reserves rolls getting them to turn up has never been easier.

And with the new Overwatch you will appreciate their 5T/4+ save.

Yealers are a solution to a *lot* of problems. Sure Long fangs, but they can handle almost any target, and with T5 4+ they are even fairly resistent. Choosing a decent piece of terrain, along with a Move and charge reroll... they can cover a decent percentage of the board. They can hit alone, or join another assault, or save a unit, or.... Just a very versatile unit.

If there is not enough terrain for Ymgarls, you obviously need more terrain. I do not see other downsides for them.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to position your army in a way, that in the case your ymgarls die because their terrain piece is blocked, you have got the enemy exactly there where you need him?

Have you guys read the "Terrain Density" rules? D3 pieces of Terrain for every 2' x 2' square. That's a minimum of 6 "reasonably sized" pieces of terrain and a max of 18. That's alot of Terrain on a regular board - usually more than the old 25%.

Good point, most people still think of 25 %, now you should be prepared to deploy about 12 pieces of reasonably sized terrain. Tyranid player should insist on 12 pieces of terrain or at least rolling a die for each 2'x2'.
