Is fleet affecting your games?

Hey guys,

I'm just wondering if the changes to the fleet rule are affecting how your games are panning out?

Is it making much difference to whether your units are making or receiving the charge?

I've not played under 6th ed yet, so would like a heads up as to how the changes affect us.

It's been a big difference to me.

Not just rerolling the charges but also running for cover in previous turns.

Move faster for runs. Takes an extra turn to assault unless your feeling cocky. Average is 7-8" with fleet.

Fleet has been awesome in the limited use I've had of it (only two Games so far). It's netted me 2 Charges that I otherwise would have failed (being able to re-roll only 1 die was key to both of those), and using it to help my Run snagged me a Linebreaker VP last Game.

That said, I also reinforced my place on the Bell Curve by getting a 3" Run on my Hormagaunts earlier in the Game

With hormagaunts, you've got three dice to run, taking the best, and you can reroll any or all of them, so getting only a 3 is...pretty bad.

I honestly kind of like this more... whilea possible 18 inch charge rage was cool, this ensures that when you want to charge, you confidently you SHOULD make it.

Huh?? You realize with fleet the average charge is about 8". Let's just say 8 for simplicity sake. That would have been a run roll of 2" in 5th ed. Don't trick yourself in to thinking 6th ed fleet is better.

After the first disappointments with Fleet units, I haven't used any. So Fleet isn't affecting my games any longer.

I think westrider proved in some really cool data post that in reality 5 is the average you're going to run into...

1/64 odds, by my math.

On Fleet Charge Ranges: You can pretty reliably Charge about 7" or so with Fleet, and 8" is still rather more likely than not. That thread's fallen back onto the second page, but I'm going to be updating and bumping it soon.

There's a graph here comparing the odds of hitting various Charge Ranges with 5th and 6th ed Fleet. 6th Ed is strictly worse than 5th in this regard.

Note that, because of Bounding Leap, Hormagaunts had an even higher 5th ed Curve than what's being shown for Daemonettes there, and thus lost even more in the transition.

I'm just taking it as it is, I like this fleet more because in the past you may run into a situation where your assault/charge would be compromised by a poor run. Now I can count on the rerolls to back me up. If I know I cannot make it, then I won't even need to take the chance and get snapshoted or caught in the open on my opponents turn. It is clear that on paper 5th ed. fleet was better, but I am satisfied with what we have now.

I am still struggling with Fleet in 6th - I am looking at the table in 5th ed mindset, if X unit runs it than then Assault - then I realise 'no, it can't'

Still really uncertain about 6th!

The average on 2D6 is 7 spot on. I know this from frequent disasters in Fantasy's Magic Phases.
From there on out the likelihood decreases the further you move away from 7, with 2 and 12 being the least likely results.

Awesome, My Army is Scything Talon heavy thus it has alot of re-rolls anyway to it suits me fine

The thing is, with Charges, you're not really looking at the odds of rolling a specific number exactly. There's nothing about overshooting your Charge if you roll too high.

What we're looking for when talking about the odds of making successful Charges is the cumulative odds of rolling a given value or above, which gives a very different distribution.

What you're mentioning is why you start seeing such big dropoffs in the cumulative distribution at around 6", and why Charge Ranges actually start becoming unreliable right around the Average.
