What is Area Terrian? Where to put in Ymgarls?

So much info, so much info overload for me. Can someone explain to my old brain simply what is area terrian in 6th edition? I am confusing myself with rereading the rules, so taking a break. Doesn't help having those days at work. So if you can explain it, and then give page numbers (just in case there is more than one page to be looking for all the rules where we can put Ymgarls) would be greatly appreciated.

So once I find out what is area terrian in 6th edition, where should I be putting Ymgarls? I saw them once and they were put in a building. This was in 5th, not sure if it was a building or ruins. Not so sure if I can do that in 6th or not.

How do you use your Ymgarls? I can't remember if they are rolled for reserves or not but will read my codex later. Again info overload.

I am thinking of using them in my next game since I never used them before.

The list of what is area terrain is on pg 91. A partial list is on pg104 and 105. Buildings are not area terrain, nor ruins that do not have bases (and in that case only the base is area terrain).

If you decide to use the Dormant rule to place them in terrain you do make a reserve roll for them.

My LGS has very little area terrain now that ruins are out :/ I might donate some forests or something just so I can play my Ymgarls.

No. As Gloomfang said, buildings are not Area Terrain.

Killme304, you could always just glue some sand on some cardboard and use that as a base for an existing ruin.

I am confused about area terrain as well. Why are ruins not considered terrain unless it has a base? On page 90 it states that "any area not specifically classed as a type of terrain (such as a building, ruin, forest, river, battlefield wreckage or unique terrain) is considered to be open ground.

So wouldn't ruins and buildings be considered pieces of area terrain that Ymgarls could come out of even if they don't have bases?

On page 98 it also states that a ruin "might" be mounted on a base, decorated with rubble, and other debris. In this case, treat the base as area terrain.

It goes on to say that if a ruin has not been mounted on a base, "then the ground floor is not counted as either difficult or area terrain. Of course, units still have to take difficult terrain tests if they move through the walls or if they climb to the upper floors".

So wouldn't ruins be considered terrain then even if they don't have a base? In the case of Ymgarls, couldn't they be placed in the ruins on the upper levels you wanted to place them there?

Putting a base on a piece of area terrain only indicates where the boundary of the area terrain feature is (p. 91)

Sorry if I am missing something or misread things. Just confused as to why ruins and buildings are not considered area terrain unless they have a base.

Ruins are thier own type of terrain. That makes them not area terrain. Ymgarls can only be placed in area terrain, not in any terrain.

The base of a ruin is area terrain. So you can place them in the base. However even if the ruin is on a base you can not place them on the upper levels as those are still ruins and therefore not area terrain.

jbrown: Area Terrain is a specific type of terrain, it can involve various examples (Forest, crater, swamp, etc.) Unless specified, most terrain is not area terrain (Hills, wrecks, ruins, statues, etc)

Ruins are 'standard' terrain, and not area terrain. If they have a base, then the base is area terrain, but the rest of the terrain is 'standard' or WYSIWYG.

Yealers can only come out of area terrain, so no to hills, or ruins, or statues; but okay with forests, or the base of a ruin, or a crater.

My generalisation is as follows:
1) Area Terrain represents uneven ground littered with debris, vegetation or ridges and craters; it is terrain that if a soldier were to be in, he would find plenty to hide behind, crouch next to, or peer round. As such, it gives a definite advantage against an enemy marksman.

2) A building, or ruin, standing on flat ground would also benefit in a similar way, but only if you were actually in it; a ruin with a wall missing and no debris on the floor would be no advantage from that direction!

3) A model of a building on a base combines these two features, so if the ruin from 2 had a base, this base represents the collapsed roof and the burnt out furniture on the ground floor, confering the normal 5+ cover save.

Remember that cover saves aren't just about a tough wall absorbing a bullet, it also represents the better chance you have of dodging temporarily out of sight whilst being targetted, and even that whilst crouching behind a cardboard box with little bullet-stopping power, you are half the height you were!

Thanks for explaining all that for me. I just noticed the cover save difference for area terrain and ruins on page 18 in the cover chart. In area terrain you just have to be standing in it to get your cover save. Whereas with ruins, the model would have to be 25% obscured.

A little confusing, but I think I understand in better now.
