I had my first day of 6th, I made 3 750 point lists, with hardly any common units, based almost exactly on my usual 1,500-2,000 ones.
1) Before I got the book
I must admit I was trepidous. As the rumours started coming in, my overwhelming thought was "I can't be bothered". It was obviously going to be a whole new game, and certainly meant forgetting all my old tactics and lists, and starting again.
If I was to spend another complete learning curve on a game, I'd rather do it on the gorgeous new Sedition Wars, or joining my son on Flames Of War, or even just really knuckle down with Malifaux, and some new crews.
2) Saturday morning
Though I had an early start at work, it was to be an event with plenty of reading time(lighting a night of cagefighting), so my wife went to my LGS and picked up my copy, plus the Psychic deck, and the templates.
The deck is great, what a shame it didn't also occur to them to put Warlord traits, Mysterious forests, water and a few others in the half-empty box!
The Templates are nicer to use than the old: ignoring all the spiky bits on the outside, you only look at the INSIDE of the frame (ie your old templates fit inside the new ones); I find them quicker to assess.
I spent the day furiously reading(resenting the bouts that were over too quickly: ("Fight harder you idiots, I'm trying to read!"), plus lurking and exchanging on my gaming Facebook group.
By the end of the day, I was looking forward to playing 6th, though feared that Tyranids were not going to be the army that saw me getting many wins.
A huge thanks to Guidebot for his early reading thread, and Coredump, who stand out as having been tireless contibutors for days, they must have bleeding fingers, or cogitator servitors!
3) The night before
With a whole day's gaming ahead with a good friend, and a friendly player of Orks, I got to writing my lists. We had decided to play multiple games of 750, to test units and rules.
He had a Battlewagon full of Lootas as one list, 30 Boy Blob as another, and multiple 12 Boy Trukks. On the other hand, he had his new Orky Flyer in every list.
I had:
1) Dakka Flyrant
Harpy
Trygon
2x5 naked Genestealers (Awesome Monster fun at 750!)
2) Tyrant, LW/BS, TL DEvs, Old Adv; Personal WL, Telepathy
5 Toxigenies & Broodlord
7 Toxigenies
15 Toxigaunts
2 Hiveguard (Unfortunately, we ran out of time for a third game, so this list didn't get tried)
3) Tervigon,AG/TS, Catalyst; Command WL, 2xBiomancy
11 Devilgaunts
11 Devilgaunts
2 Zoe spore
5 Ravenors, rending
4) The first game
This game was 5 objectives(with Heavy Support counting as scoring), long table edges, my flying monster list, his Battlewagon.
Flying Monsters are fun!I didn't get grounded once; I had to roll 6 times, so I was lucky, but I play a risky game generally, as although the losses can be bad, the wins are so awesome that they make up for it!
I mopped up every lone unit, only the Battlewagon proved impossible, and we ended on a Draw for one objective each, BUT the new secondary objectives meant I won by one point, for First Blood!
5) The second game
My Tervigon versus his2 Trukks, 2 small Loota squads. "The Relic": 1 objective in the middle, first there picks it up and runs of with it.
I went first, and a Tervigon OWNS this game! She sits at 12", spawns 6", babies move 6" into base contact with the relic, then run back! First turn snatch! From then on I ran it back to my corner, layers of Devilgaunts, spawned gaunts and a pack of slavering Raveners chewing up anything that came close! He conceded when he had nothing but a Trukk with a Big Mek left, at the end of turn 3!
6) So, what do I think?
GW have changed the game in my favour. I am not a competitive player, and don't build for tournaments.
6th is much more unpredictable: good or bad rolls on your Warlord table, Psychic options, Mission type and setup now play a MUCH more dominant role.
The new mysterious terrain rules are FANTASTIC! My Genies had to creep through a forest full of vicious birds, whilst my Trygon had a lovely bath in a lake with Feel No Pain bubblebath!
More missions is great, IMHO, and the secondary objectives mean you can no longer play for a draw. This blocks certain boring cheesy tournament tactics, and means every game is winnable.
All in all, some of my fears were realised: we do need a TOTAL reappraisal of units (can somebody go and bring Loate out of his stasis chamber please?), of formations and tactica, and a set of FAQ/Errata or a new Codex with some Sky shooting would help a lot. (The Ork Bomber was a nightmare: 9 TL shots at BS4, doubled on the turn he called Waaugh!)
However, this was one of the most fun days I've had in 40K, I can't wait for my next games against my tourney-standard GK friend (Draigowing, let's see what ya got!), another friends Blood Angels, and anothers IG.
Well done GW, they have brought the game back to the fun players, and reduced the competitive edge it had been tending towards.
Herendeth my 2 cents, hope that if, like me, you had reservations about the changes, I have encouraged you to dive in!
