Characters: Who is and isn't

Hmmm.... It seems like the term 'character' is getting a pretty broad description in the BRB, and not a lot of detail to make the call for ourselves.

Some are listed in the back of the BRB, but that obviously is not exhaustive.

Mephiston is not listed as a character, but is used in a character example in the book.

He is a librarian, but even librarians are not listed as characters... except they have the special rule of Independent Character. But Mephi doesn't have that rule... yet is still a character.

The Sanguinar is not listed as a character either... is he still a character?

Most models with the Independent Character rule were not listed... but the Reclusiarch has the IC rule and *is* listed.


So, what qualifies Mephiston to be a character, and compare that to DoM and OOE.

Our faq does call our uniques 'special characters'...

Im going with this guy ^ they are a unique unit comprised of 1 mini. If that isn't a character I don't know what is.

I checked the GW that runs the tournys I play in and they are using all Uniques are charaters per the rules. They run Throne of Skulls, so it will probably be that way for that too.

I'd like to bring up also, that the Tyranid Prime is not listed as a "ch"

Under character types: Most characters are ... **edited for length**. Other characters, such as (insert name here) of the (insert army name here), fight as units of their own. **fluffiness**. Regardless of fluff, they all follow rules for characters.

Therefore, Deathleaper, Swarmlord, Parasite (IC), Doom, Old One Eye, Tyranid Prime (IC) of the Tyranids, follows all rules for characters... Plus Tervigons, Broodlords and Tyrants.

Yep, I was going to quote that section.

Also, it mentions Independent Characters right below it.

Prime, Broodlord, DoM, both Tyrant and Swarmlord, OOE, and Deathleaper are all characters.

I still have no clue why the book lists a Tervigon as a character, unless that means that all models that can only be in a unit by themselves are also characters. But then why isn't the Trygon a character? Maybe it was just a typo?

Maybe because the Tervigon can be a HQ choice... this could be why it is a character?

It's because as a HQ it can be your warlord, so needed to be a character.

If you look across all the armies in the rulebook, out of the dozens of special characters, not a single one is listed. This is because they are already clarified as characters by their named, unique status.

The only anomoly I can spot is that Ymgarls aren't listed either and are also referred to as special characters in our FAQ.

paladins are characters, so why could ymgarls not be characters too?

That sure needs to be FAQed, but if the rulebooks says uniques are characters, and if our codex/FAQ says ymgarls are unique, then we should consider ymgarls as character...souldn't we?

I don't think our Codex classifies them as "unique", since you can take multiple broods of them, therefore they're not characters. Our current FAQ doesn't even have a mention of anything related to that...

Actually it does, in the same question that refers to our other characters on page 4.

I doubt anyone would try and play them like that though.
