Hey guys.
Ok this is my second post here, but I figured I should introduce myself as well as my Hivefleet. I know the idea isn't original but it occurred to me shortly after deciding to collect Nids. What if Nids had jumped the gap from flesh and bone to alloy and piston? If somehow they had found a way to fuse their bodies and minds with power claws or other such technology? The only problem is that Tyranids don't see metals and minerals as a food source. So I took full advantage of one of my favourite parts of this wonderful hobby. FLUFF! So here begins the tales of Hivefleet Ryonis. This story is fairly long, so skip to the end before you TL;DR.
Hivefleet Ryonis is said to have been a splinter fleet of one of the larger Hivefleets that had terrorized the Galaxy for so long, but no records exist confirming the exact source of this peculiar Hivefleet. No matter where it had come from the fleet had not been a particularly dangerous threat to the Imperium, drifting through the empty space between several systems, using valuable biomass just to keep the ships from breaking apart. In a last ditch effort to save itself, the Hivefleet propelled the cluster of ships towards the nearest star, Cephalim Major. Of the three lonely planets that orbited this Blue Star only one showed any signs of life, the mining world of Ryonis. Burned to a bleak cinder the surface of Ryonis held little of value to Man or Xenos. But humanity, being thegreedy resilient people that they are had merely burrowed under the surface and had found a literal goldmine, as well as deposits of other incredibly valuable minerals. And so the future of Ryonis had been set. The humans had hollowed out the centre of the planet and begun tearing the minerals from the very earth they now lived in.
With the ships safely in orbit, the orphaned Hivefleet sent every last creature it could spare to harvest the biomass of the inhabitants of the planet below. The slaughter continued for many weeks and the tunnels of the mining world ran slick and red with gore, with the Tyranids slowly working their way towards the core.
When the end finally came the Governor of the planet stood alone among the consoles in the Central Control Room of the planet, weeping for the countless thousands lost, as a lone Zoanthrope approached. His grieving interrupted by this alien presence the Governor turned the blinding sadness for loss of his planet into a clarifying rage. Charging the beast he brought his symbol of office, an ornately crafted miners pick, to bear upon the source of all his pain and suffering. Jamming the blade deep into the protective chitin surrounding the membranous brain tissue the Governor vented his hatred. Using the pick as a lever, the Governor hauled himself up onto the head of the creature and reached above his head, pulling free some wiring. With 2.21 gigawatts of power flowing through the wires held in each hand the Governor dealt the final blow to the xeno, bringing his arms down with all the force of an angry God-Emperor and jammed the live wires into the exposed brain at the top of the Zoanthropes head. For one glorious moment the Hive Mind looked into the soul of the Omnissiah, and the Omnissiah looked back long enough for it's firewalls to crumble. As the defences on both sides fell, pieces of the Machine Spirit poured into the open mind of the Zoanthrope and lodged firmly into its subconscious. The Governor was thrown clear of the xeno by the surge of power flowing through the conductive shell, no longer anything more than a pile of ash sprinkled lightly across the room. As most of the power had flowed through the Zoanthrope and into the unlucky Governor the Zoanthrope was merely well done, an irresistible snack to Hormogaunts looking to absorb all the biomass available. And so, the Machine Spirit was introduced to the biomass tanks of the Hivefleet, being passed on to every new creature spawned in the depths of the ships. The newly emerged Hormogaunts and Termagants looked upon the mineral rich world before them through news eyes, and with a new perspective lodged firmly in their very DNA.
The world was stripped of all resources: coal, brass, iron, silver, gold, and the equipment that was used to mine these minerals by the feeble humans were brought back to the ships, to be incorporated into the newest batch of monstrosities forged in the recently grown forges of the Hivefleet. Refuelled and reconstituted, Hivefleet Ryonis went on its way better equipped than any Hivefleet before it. Able to block local comms signals and force access to a planets databases to download plans and vital information Hivefleet Ryonis are able to overcome and, indeed, pre-empt any plans put into motion in defence of their prey world. And so the horde continues its path of destruction and death through the universe, sounding for all the world like a million pissed off dial-ups.
Due to absorbing all the dirt and minerals of the planet the Hives colours have changed, further confusing the issue of its parent Fleet. The rich earth of the inner crust has stained the skin of the entire Hive a deep brown. The minerals that were absorbed were put to use reinforcing the chitinous armour of the Hive with the rarest minerals being used for the most powerful creatures. As a by-product of having the Machine Spirit present in the Hives collective consciousness is that the machinery recovered from the mining planet has been used to augment many of the larger creatures, such as Carnifexes, having steam powered mechanical crushing claws. Among the many reports filtering in from confrontations with Hivefleet Ryonis it is not uncommon for the more heavily augmented creatures to be seen with a large power pack grafted into their backs, fuelling their whirring blades and grinding gears.
Back to the physical side of things, the Hormogaunts and Termagants are going to have a deep brown skin tone with a bright brassy/bronze carapace and a reddish rusted iron highlight. These are fairly common metals that do not have a huge amount value attached to them. The Warriors will retain the brown skin/brass carapace but with a silvery highlight on them to show the slightly elevated status. Some of the Warriors might also have power packs or possibly small augmentations such as eyes and maybe arms. All the models will have a bright yellow used to do the fine details such as the vents in the arms and legs of the Hormogaunts.
So, what do you guys think? I'll be uploading some pictures of the Hormogaunt I'm experimenting with the colour scheme on if anyone is interested.
TL;DR, nids who ate some robots and now have the Machine Spirit in their heads as well as the Hive Mind.
