Help with ork deffguns on the lootas

In the description of the deffgun, it says that it's type is heavy D3.
My friend plays orks, and when he uses his lootas with the deffguns, he rolls 3 dice and adds them up, giving each unit the combined total of the dice (he has 5 lootas, and was averaging like 9 shots a unit which is 45 attacks for the squad). It didn't seem right to me, so I asked him about it, but he says that you do in fact roll three dice for each units attacks, not a three sided die, and a person at games workshop agreed (he was also an ork player) I didn't wan't to offend the pro, so I played with these rules.I only managed to kill 2 dreads and some bikers, while he killed all but 3 of my genestealers, because his 5 lootas shot out like 200+ shots in five turns, and there were only five of them! So which of the following is correct...

1. Roll 3 die for each deffgun's attack
2.Roll a three sided die for each deffgun's attack
3. or am i just really off?

D3 means a 3 sided dice, so he can get 1-3 shots with each.

yep D3 means a 3 sided dice
3D6 means 3 D6 - or three ordinary dice added together -- ask to look in their codex at the rules next time

Another similar question. Do you roll once fore the whole squad or once per loota?

Roll once, whole squad shoots that many each. So a squad of 10 will shoot either 10, 20, or 30 shots that round.

edit: Oh, check out page 5, 4th paragraph. Makes it pretty plain for the 'pro' at your shop. (a D3 is pretty standard notation in hundreds of games.)

D3 is simply rolling a dice and halving the score, rounding downwards. So 1 or 2 =1, 3 or 4 =2, 5 or 6 =3. Simple as that.

Wow I haven't seen that much cheating in along time. Lootas are good but not that good. As coredump has pointed out the page number already. Another page # for you though is #43 in the ork codex under lootas. It clearly states what the deffgun does, with an example even. If you don't have one here is the key part...
"...Roll once each Shooting phase to determine the unit's rate of fire, but only after the target unit has been chosen. For instance, a unit of ten lootas chooses to fire at a squad of Space Marines, and makes the roll to see how many shots they fire. They roll a 6, which equals a 3 on a D3. This means they will fire 30 shots this turn."

For future reference if it sounds to horrible to be true ask to see the listing in the codex.

Dang, I must get this information to the local gameshop! Last time I saw someone use those they rolled a d3 for each guy. How time consuming is that?
