Rant on Inception

So I have had plenty of time to consider my thoughts on inception because I walk around in a circle for half my job.

So here is my rant,

It isn't a terrible movie, but it isn't "Amazing, awesome, visionary, or deserving of any awards." (Except perhaps in CGI.) As so many of my friends and aquaintinces claim.

In a nutshell I think it is Oceans 11 meets the Matrix (Except it wasn't as good as those two movies.)

If I have to truly pic on it, I go straight for how many van falling scenes and fighting on the sceiling scenes there are.
Seriosuly though, consider it. You could play a drinking game to either one of those much like the first Spiderman movie. (Take a drink everytime they say Spiderman, you'll be wasted by the time they hit the halfway part of the movie.)

After that I hit the fact that the idea itself is so nebulous. A dream within a dream, within a dream, wait how many levels is that? Keep going, within a dream *starts counting on hands* within a dream. And to act like the idea of going into a sub reality by laying down in chairs and hooking in some tubes is new? Hello Matrix anyone?

Then the girl who designs the levels, why is she there? Is she not following around a group of vagabonds to help ruin a major company and a person's life and acting like it is DISNEYLAND? There isn't one slightly good character in the whole thing, which is cool with me(I love the Godfather!) but the movies that have all bad guys acknowledge that they do, instead Inception tugs at your feelings with this lame "I want to get back to my kids." Admit you are evil/not good, and then do what you want.

And Worst of all, the questioning end.. did it keep spinning. It's like the lame ass trick I used to use in 9th grade with my English teacher where I'd turn in a mostly written story, and if I didn't finish it in time I'd just add .... and say I wanted her to come up with her own ending. (Got A's on that (please do not swear) too.)

The only reason this (please do not swear) is considered visonary is because very few people will go against the crowd and say "Uhh no not amazing."

Please, I Implore you prove me wrong, make me see the error in my judgement of the movie. When I say this to friends they get mad at me and act like I am ignorant. When I ask them why it is good, no one can give me a straight answer.

I don't disagree with you. I feel that they had one good character though, the forger. I have no recollection of his name, but he was a well based if not over qualified choice for this movie.

It's a good action film that was massively over-hyped. If you mix a few explosions with a concept with the potential to confuse {deam (within a dream)ⁿ} it will do well - the Matrix would be another example that uses this combination, and that too is a good action film.

Anyway, I've seen it twice now and thought it was alright. Wasn't amazing, wasn't bad. Was a decent film with some cracking CGI and an annoying bit at the end..

Right, you feel about inception how I feel about Avatar - A not too interesting story with predictable characters with a gimmick.

I love it purely for the endless hordes of memes it created.

People always tend to say good things about movies with convoluted and overly complex plots. Makes them feel intelligent, especially in comparison with films with a very basic 'goodies vs. baddies' design.

It's like with Confidence and Donnie Darko. They're good films, but a lot of people tend to like them for the strange plot structure and overhype them as a result.

I haven't seen Inception but, as a David Lynch fanboy, I tend to love convoluted plots that keep you thinking long after the movie has ended.

I do hate the "This is an intelligent movie for intelligent people" reputation bullcrap that these kind of movies seem to draw upon themselves though. I mean, you watched the movie. You didn't make the damn thing. How does that prove to be intellectually superior? And wanting to sit back and just enjoy a film rather than work through a visual conundrum doesn't make you any less knowledgable. It's just a matter of taste.

I might get around to watching Inception eventually though. I've heard the plot is akin to Paprika with its whole dream-or-reality setting so it's at least piqueing my interest.

I felt the same way with the girl, she was really just their to look pretty. Her role could have easily been filled with any other character in the movie.

1 too many of the characters lacked real motivation. This is there job but yet they seem so vastly unprepared.

2 Too much "magic" (please do not swear) in the movie. One of the minds "defenses" was a train in a city? really? Am i the only one who didnt except the BS they through at you? If limbo was so maliable, why did they still walk everywhere. And why would the buildings fall apart and not just meld back into the ground. This is dream space which is not subject to physics unless a mind is controlling it.

3 Action. Everywhere. If you want to make it philosophical you have to try harder than that.

So many more things wrong with the movie. I never saw it in theaters because i saw the trailer and knew it was a mess without even seeing it. Admittedly it was well executed, but with so little structure it was hard to retain the suspension of disbelief.

Inception was a good movie. It wasn't revolutionary in any way, it was just a genuinely good (Good =/= great) and quite well written, boasting some really nice special effects.

Sadly, there is always a fanbase for movies like this that make it out to be the next big thing. Ignore it. I used to be a Jurassic Park fanboy. I was blinded to its flaws. I still think it's a good movie, but nothing beyond good. Even the original Star Wars movies are nothing beyond maybe great to me, though the prequels are pretty trash bar a special effects fest.

Look at movies like Fast and Furious as a small example. Stuff like that sells ridiculously, people call it the next big thing etc. and they aren't really that good at all. It's just personal preference. Leave it be.

Inception was one of the better movies last year none the less.

This is very untrue. I always see people going against the masses because they know they'll get a reaction. Maybe not on boards like this, usually somewhere like metacritic where they can alter the score.

Funnily enough, I've only watched Inception once on a plane journey. I also watched Toy Story 3 which I personally thought was a better movie.

Why is everyone so confused at the girls role in the movie? She's the architect! She creates the dreams that they put the subject in! But anyway, I'm going to reply to zephoid:

1: Lack motivation? If they didn't get out of the dream then they would be trapped in limbo forever (potentially) The reason they seemed unprepared is that they didn't know what they were getting themselves into.

2: I don't fully understand this point. Please explain it further.

3: The Matrix is philisophical, more philisophical than inception. The matrix is philosophical, Inception was confusing.

P.S, are you telling me that you didn't gasp at the end? Didn't spend hours afterwards thinking whether he was in a dream, or limbo, or reality, or that he was always in limbo and has just woken up?

This is, then again, my opinion. I respect yours, you respect mine.
