New Pen Tablet (help me decide)

Now, I know there is a HUGE difference in pricing, but there's a reason.

Intuos 4 Large:



Cintiq12:


I'm really quite in love with the Cintiq, but it is double the price. Instead of spending 40,000$ on art school, I'm going to spend my time learning from online tutorials and maybe get good enough to become an intern.

What do you think?

I've used a Cintiq 12 before and I have nothing but good things to say about it, so I would suggest that.

Going for the Intuos may always be smarter due to the price curve though.

I have found that larger drawing surface tops awesome features every time.

I bought a pen tablet a few years ago, used it once, then decided using a mouse was easier and it wasn't worth the effort

Haha. Thats what I first thought when i got my tablet (ITS SO SENSITIVE) but now I'm really used to it and when I write my name with the mouse it looks really bad. Infact Ill upload a picture for you.

Free handing on a tablet is much better for me.

What do you do with it one should determine that choice. I've seen very lackluster reviews of the cintiq from friends of mine who own and use them on a daily basis. Drawing on a screen is a nice gimmick... if only the color profile was correct. Hooking up a cheap second monitor and an intuos 4 would be my recommendation. Also, I don't feel that the largest tablet sizes adds much value. I would highly recommend the medium size intuos 4. It's just big enough to not be cumbersome and very much worth the price (would save you somewhere around $240-$300). I love mine to death.

Thanks Swarmy, that helps a lot. I also decided to wait for next years model Cintiq (they update every 5-6 years aparently, and next year is the 5th). For now I'll do what you recommend with the medium sized Intuos. Maybe next years Cintiq will have better colour and and not have the lag I was hearing about.
