If general stops existing it will only mean less flame wars on other parts of the forum.

(Yes, I remember Danger flaming another member on the painting board just because he could, and Fungus trolling poor people that he felt were ignorant or dumb)

In fairness though, you haven't really been around that long in relation to most of the regulars. I think the general section goes through phases; a lot of the interesting topics had run their course and not many new ones were being offered. But it always picks up again. I think it's been this was several times before (and I've only been here a year or so!) but everyone seems to have made a big deal about it this time. I remember when I first joined I got accused of sending threads off topic, even though it wasn't me posting the off topic comments, and it was grim at the time, but then it all became nice again

Hmm... it seemed to me that recently General was getting better at being on-topic. Oh wells, we'll see how things go. As long as the GG and Joy/Yeehaw threads still stick around I'm a happy Kroot.

For the record, I actually go on 4 of the boards here regularly - the top three boards, General, Other GW stuff and Tactics, and here too.

Rather than actually setting up a kiddie pool forum for the trolls, you could just set up a link to some other forum where that sort of behaviour is already the norm, and make the link look like a subforum heading.

One thing that might help is to maybe... get rid of the trolls? I mean, if they are disrupting everyone else here and not being helpful then why have them around? I know it would be mean to ban some-one from the site, but if they are doing nothing but starting flame wars and the like... would we not be better off without them?

As for general, I see why you may want to get rid of it, but if the site did not have a space for people just to joke around, have fun, blow off steam then THAT would leak into the other sections of the forum and ruin those... but then again it could make everyone act 'normal' but really, it is the mods' call

I agree. Kicking off all the trolls would solve a lot of problems. But look at how much backlash I get for killing a thread. How much worse would it be if I arbitrarily declared people trolls and banned them? As much as a trolling "hit list" would help it wouldn't be fair to anyone.


We also are not getting rid of the General board. But at the same time we can't have it have the General board devolve into chaos. Please remember that this is a tyranid forum, not the /b/ board. When the General board begins to trump the tyranid boards then we will need to look at doing something with the General board.

It is my hope that the small changes that we have done will keep the General board in check. Killing the community thread means that people will have to start up more threads to talk in. This prevents stagnation, which leads to off topic posts across the General board.

You guys can agree with me or not, but the bottom line is that I'm doing this to try and make The Tyranid Hive a better place.

^ Your not alone. I used to go all the way back there to. To see what the forum was like back before a lot of the current Hivers joined, it was a LOT better than it is now.( No offence to anyone) I totally agree with Yori about the stagnant topics and stuff.

Oh, I am a troll elsewhere... but never here.

I'll take full resposibility for mehcandrite but that has nothing to do with the situation down general-side. I also believe that my Kharnesque roleplaying was better than half the drivel spouted from the threads I graced, many of which were grey husks when I "spruced" them.

The problem hasn't been fixed, far from it, but I'll try again.

I myself said a while back I was done with General for some of those very same reasons. Those trolls, for a very silly reason, basically attacked my integrity. Seeing the general state of how General was going, I just decided "Whatever, this atmosphere is toxic anyway, so long and no thanks owed because there wasn't any fishes", and hadn't looked back. Then one of those peoples hounded me down to private message to call me a crybaby.

So yes, i stand by the quotes statement as well. General has gotten poisonous because of:

This. This is the problem here.
Now we have this division of peoples who are considered "Regulars" of General, and those who aren't.
Those "Regulars" tend to form this clique, where if one does wrong, one non-regular calls him out on it or only dares to ask "huh... what?", then the others will gang up and back that person.
Now, some other cases i've seen where if someone happens to be considered a non-regular, then very often their points will get ignored or trashed.

I'm not citing names, because to anyone with a critic's eye will be able to spot those instances, and i'm not out to do some name calling here.

The topics more often than not were harmless, if not at times somewhat "ewww" type topics, but inevitably, i would see this phenomenon where they would get derailed and tainted with a tone of uneasiness that just made me not want to remain there.

All i can say is that it's been months i hadn't poked my nose in this section, and today on a boring evening with nothing much to do, I did, and saw this thread. Just had to drop my opinion.


Now mind you, this section does have some interesting topics at times, so I wouldn't wish it to disapear. However, i do believe it's time for a serious cleanup.

I don't think that us "regulars" gang up on newbies. The only ones who get the ire of more then one member at a time are the ones who quite honestly deserve it (terrible spelling (like worse then sal), useless threads, that sort of thing).

If the "regulars" really were as exclusive as you say, then why are we getting new "regulars" all the time? All that term means is a member who spends a lot of their time on the general board.
