No more Shooting closest unit?

Hey gang!

After reading at least twice all the new rules from 5ed, I am shocked that i could not find anywhere the old rule of shooting the closest unit, so I am starting to think that maybe it's because they removed it from the game. Is it?

I always found it a bit lame that even when your Ld check missed for shooting a farther unit, you could still shoot to he closest, but removing this all entirely seems to me to be just out of logic and tactically poor for the new rules, even while i am liking them more than 4th.

So please, someone tell me what happened to this rule!

There is no longer any Target Priority rules. If you can see it, you can shoot it (albeit with some form of penalty with Cover Saves being generated in many non-closest unit situations).

Meh, I'm not bothered. I've only ever failed my target priority once for my non-gaunts. Dang rule never worked to my advantage.

Yeah, failed TPs almost never happened anyway. I did get the target priority spore mine trick to work once, though. Although now, you can chuck spore mines down to give units behind them 4+ cover saves...

Not really, it may obscure one model, but unless there are only 2 models in the brood, the spore mine won't help much.

I do a small line of 8 or 10 (2/4 or 2/5) then you can stick two mines infront of the Hormies, and get away with a cover save, albeit for only one turn. Also if you get the FW ripper swarms, they are big enough to provide the save.

The mines are one unit, there is no way they will obscure 50% of the hormagaunts.

Even the FW mines will not do it, since it will not obscure half of the models.

No, it just doesn't work.

Look, put down 8 marines, now put down 12 gaunts. Now try and put down 3 mines (in base contact) between those two units. Can most of the marines see at least 7 of the gaunts clearly. (without being obscured by the mines?)

Then no cover save.

Not that it matters because...
1- Biovores must target a unit.
2- Deepstriking mines would be wasted deepstriking them in front of your own troops. Watch as the enemy shoots at the mines when your units get near them...
3- Mines randomly move.
