tau vs. nid

I'm a tau player and i can't seem to beat my friend who plays nids please help me.

Best I can say to you as an IG player who's dealt with both Tau and the Nids is to ensure, above all else, that you keep back from them. Missiles are your friend. Stay mobile, shoot, keep from letting them pin you. I've done a surprise drop with my stormtroopers on some tau before, and while they handled my shooting alright, when I closed to hand-to-hand, they were minced up..but when the tau player started keeping himself out of range of my movement and charging, they were able to wipe me. And use those missiles, again!

I would suggest synapse. Any thing you can leave out of synapse is going to be a pain for them. I would do it in this order:

Zoans
Warriors
Tyrants.

Nothing is a bigger pain for Tyranid players than gaunts or hormies outside synapse...

As a guard player and a nid player.... find something to use as a meatshield, dig in, and because you are the tau, blast away.... Use kroot or something to pin down his horde and just blast away the gaunts and genestealers, if he is stupid enough to get his synaps in range, blast them.

5th edition is so soon it'll change everything, but we're only giving out 4th edition info for the mo.

My friend plays Tau and I've often looked at how he fights, so I can only give a rough idea of how to help.

Firstly, there should be roughly 24" between you, with plenty of cover. Use plasma and jump-shoot-jump with crisis suits to try and off the big fellas, namely the Flying Tyrant, which gets to you soon. The carnifexes with devourers you also might want to off before they get close enough to start spraying. Broadsides should just keep pounding monstrous creatures, trying to kill as many as possible.

If there's a lot of gaunts, go for the synapse creatures. Basically, Warriors, Zoanthropes, and Tyrants. For thropes and tyrants use broadsides/plasma, for warriors try hammerhead large blasts. I remember those things being nasty...

Markerlights. I saw a Tau player overload on these, made life a nightmare. You want anything that'll mean more dead numbers, so extra bs is good. I'm not sure if there's a re-roll miss one, but try that too.

For dangers, first go for the Hormagaunts. Leapy scythed gaunts can charge you from a distance, large template them and shoot them down first, or thin them a little. If you see any gargoyles (gaunts with wings) treat them the same way.

Genestealers come a close second. They get armour saves against you with an upgrade, so try and set it up to focus on them when there's not much else.

Raveners are not to be ignored. They might not look much, but try and get a substantial number of shots off when you can to kill one.

Nothing much you can do against biovores, just keep in cover against them.

Zoanthropes... keep vehicles away, try to get a few plasma shots off at them.

Warriors can vary, depending on their weaponry. Medium threat, maybe a little worse if they're kitted out for close combat.

Rippers are rare, but might leap you. Drop a template, should kill most fast.

Lictors are a pain for you. Keep broadsides a good distance from any potential terrain the lictors could appear from, and maybe have a fast response unit like some kroot or vespid or something to jump it if it appears.

Above all, if the nids get within potential charging distance the next turn, try and off the ones can will charge you next turn. If you can't shoot them all, try throwing some kroot at them and hope to have it so they only get out of combat on their turn, so you can blast the survivors apart.



Ok, this is all purely theoretical, as I'm not sure of the Tau details - just going off what I've seen my mates use. Hope it helps! Also, let us know what kind of army your opponent fields.

My advice having played someone who loves to make his army as much of as ever.

Take a squad of crisis suits with plasma rifles. Have them jump out, shoot at monstrous creatures, and jump back behind cover. Seriously, one or two squads of 3 of these can put down 1 MC a turn easy.

Rail gun Submunitions can be great for taking out gaunts. Missle pods are good. Take at least two squads of fire warriors of decent size. They can do some heavy damage against troops(esp nids since our armor saves on troops are garbage), and once in rapid fire range they can decimate troops ready to charge.

i play tau and nids. my freind plays nids, and ive killed him with tau. my solution, is to have, either a lot of battle suits, alot of kroot, or alot of fire warriors. have some fire warriors besneaky , and flank them( try to have a battlesuit with them.)im not sure if this is allowed where u play, but i try to have all of my battlesuits have a railgun. if thats not allowed, than take many broadsides.
kill synapse units first. if they are hiding behind other units, then , kill everything in front of them, or if their synapse is mainly hive tyrants, then just shoot them. once synapse is all dead, kill monsterous creatures. the squad of fire warriors should try to get smaller squads to lose 1/4 of their guys so they have to take a ld test. their ld is (please do not swear) when not in synapse range.so make sure synapse is dead! also when you are doing this, try to stay at the maximum distance away, as tau have good range and nids dont.

if you use alot of kroot, infiltrate them with stealth suits and kill synapse, and monsterous creatures.

so remember, KILLING SYNAPSE IS KEY!
