Monstrous Rending Claws on Melee Flyrant - Sell me on them

I have been running a cheap winged Flyrant (2 Scytals, AG) occasionally with Chamelonic carapace (-1 to hit). Gives him 5 attacks, rerolling 1's to hit, AP-3 and flat 3 damage.

He has always been a bit of a target and as such a low performer. But he has had the best success as mobile synapse in support of 2 large gargoyle broods.

I keep seeing people on the Hive talking about MRC Tyrants and see them in lots of lists. I am having a hard time seeing the draw because unless you are taking the Mawclaws you lose the reroll to hit, lower your number of attacks, and become D3 damage just to gain the reroll to wound and -5pts. Even with a pair of gun arms, 4 atk reroll to hit and flat 3 damage looks better than reroll to would d3 damage.

Maybe its just me but I am not seeing the trade off. Can people enlighten me?

OK. 1: You're really underselling wound rerolls. When the best targets for multi damage are high toughness (i.e. vehicles), full rerolls to wound are really helpful. Especially with the new wound chart: against anything other than T3, reroll wounds is greater than reroll 1s to hit.

Now, you could use voracious to get that benefit and bring scy tals ahead, but...well, is it worth the CP? And you've still got pt 3. (Voracious is very relevant if you're running Behemoth though, since scythes of terran are actually quite good).
2. Tying into 1: 6s with MRC are AP-6 and straight Dam 3 (almost always Dam 4 because of TS). With more rerolls, more 6s.
3. It's not -5 pts, it's -15/20 pts. MRC are free. And you're underestimating the ability to take a gun without compromising melee.

Basically, the difference between MRC and double scy tals is usually only about 0.2 wounds on average (in MRC's favour against T7+, in scy tals against lower T), while MRC beats single scy tal against basically everything. Incredibly marginal, and devs/shooting weapon of choice easily surpasses that difference, guaranteed, since they're shooting and don't have any of the inherent reliabilities related to melee output.

They're free personally I usually run hoard armies and that allows me to bring 1-3 extra hormagaunts. Doesn't sound like much but it's saved my life more than once having the gaunts eat heavy flamer overwatch. Those rerolls are just icing on the cake to me

What about a dedicated AT Flyrant, yes or no? I've been eyeing the Miasma Cannon and tried it once or twice with mediocre results, Kraken hive fleet IIRC. I think I had MRC for my other slot. On paper I like it - Smite, Psychic Scream, Miasma and then charge, rinse and repeat. Should put a good dent in most tin cans, someone can work out the math against T7/3 pls?
But you get no autohit turn 1 for Miasma (deepstrike outside 9") and I often wish I had more anti-infantry instead. Is it a good idea to make a Flyrant dedicated AT? I'm thinking that it's often enough to just charge the vehicle to neutralise it, not that important to kill it in one turn. 20 points isn't nothing and for everything outside 8" it's kind of swingy.

That's their problem, no shooting leaves only psychic and melee. No problem in psychic. Fail my charge and he gets to stand there and eat bullets 😓
