Dark, menacing colour scheme?

So I’ve got a starter kit from FW ready for the new codex, and I was wondering on dark, menacing colour schemes to go for? I’m thinking of calling my hive fleet “Wanhope” meaning “despair” and would like something grim and spooky to fit the name. Any suggestions appreciate!

I do like the black/white combo but I’ve done Texans on my other army (Tau) and don’t want to do the same again (plus white is a pain to paint. The blue looks ok, but I couldn’t make it menacing very easily without adding additional parts (and I usually keep my schemes simple).

Black and red was my original thought as well, but don’t know what patterns I would use or which colour would go where...

For the menacing look, eyes and teeth, eyes and teeth. Weapon symbiotes a bit I guess, but those are sci-fi-esque abstracts, not threatening really. Go with what we humans know, glowy eyes and sharp teeth in the night are fearful. Of course don't go over with the basic color scheme that might detract from this, you need that contrasting eyes and teeth to stand out, to be the only thing they see in the darkest night as those nightmares come for you. As the tyranids, come for you.

That is quite impressive actually! Like the idea of red faces - warpaint almost. I’ll definitely be using black in my scheme as well - not sure how or what colours to use with it...

Alright. Bit of a turn around but I’ve decided on a colour scheme. I’ve gone from “dark and menacing” to “bright and colourful”! Saw Blue table painting’s “Fungus Nids” and I’m completely sold:





I would however like some kind of plant or flower (preferably artificial ) to go on the bases, as I feel like such a colourful scheme needs some focus or... excuse? even (if it looks like it might blend in with the alien fauna then it’s slightly less ridiculous). Anyone know a good place to get artificial (either plastic hobby ones or “realistic”) plants that can be painted? Much obliged!
