Now that the dust has settled a bit...

I'm thoroughly unimpressed with our index. I love genestealers. They are auto include and will absolutely wreck face. Outside of that and the power of synapse (which is a must if you run hordes) we are underwhelming. We are miles improved from the last 2 editions and we have some options in our units. Other than genestealers we don't really have anything unique about us. Any of the other armies I have tried have some fantastic synergies that you can unpack for some really cool results.

Don't misinterpret, I'm not saying we are bad. We can actually be quite good. I just haven't found anything in our codex that is more than meets the eye or units that have some really awesome abilities that really shine in particular situations. We can be good, but we don't have anything uniquely awesome about us that other armies cannot do better.

In short I'm disappointed that less than 2 months into an edition I feel like I've exhausted the potential of our army since list building and finding hidden gems is what I love most about the game. Heres hoping for a good codex.

 Yea well without a codex just an index, that is to be expected no? I expect stratagems, warlord traits, relics , expanded psychic powers, hive fleet tactics will make it more fun for you.

 This index blows the last codix out of the water even without that, so many viable units have made it enjoyable enough for me. I worry more that we will be one of the last codexes made and will struggle tremendously at the end of the index timeframe.

Sounds like you need to play The 9th Age. Got lots of synergies, hidden gems, and just when you think you got the army figured out, a tournament result gets posted where your faction won with a list you didn't think about.

As for your complaint about Tyranids: Welcome to Gamesworkshop.
They said over and over they are not a game company. They even started renaming their stores to 'warhammer'.

They make fun games that are mostly about rolling dice.

I'm hoping when the codex comes out we get a bit better, cause lets face it we still have bad or useless options. Yeah Genestealers are cool and they're one of my favorite unit, but if I have to include them in every army to win then there's something wrong with the army as a whole. I'm hoping they fix the stats so the shooting bugs are good at shooting and the CC bugs are good at CC. GW has shown willingness to fiddle with points and stats with the other books though I'm pretty doubtful that they'll do so with us. It really seems they're trying to sweep us under the rug, I recently got the rulebook and there is half a page of fluff for Tyranids and a page for Cultists but every other army has multiple pages. It really seems they're trying to downplay Tyranids though I don't know why.

Though my main complaint is everyone just keeps saying "Oh wait for the next codex to come out" Which has been going on since 4th Ed. I think people are delusional towards the reality of GW & Nids.

I can't recall how many times I've heard over the years that I just need to be patient and wait because the mythical unicorn of codex that I am looking for is just around the corner.

Not really helpful on a Tyranid forum; can they be fielded in 9th Age?  lol


Matt - we'll get our codex in due time, with updates continuing in FAQs and also in Chapter Approved books at longer intervals.  We may even get new models with rules in the boxes before a new codex.  Either way carry on trying out new stuff or chack back in a month or so to see if anything's been tweaked to your liking.

It's just like the landlord waiting to get rent from his tweaker tenant going "I'll have the money next month I swear" I think it's easier to accept the fact that nids are what they are and won't really get that much better.

Actually yes.
You can use any models from any company. So there are a few factions that would be a suitable choice. Might have some issues with basing as the game is on squares and movement is quite important to the game.

I know I am not the best to give advice since I suck at 40K, but to try and be positive, looking for hidden gems takes a long time. Remember it was what 2 or so years when Lictor Shame was discovered. So who knows what can be found still.

Our army isnt that much better than the last one. We had a few good choices last round that really suffered from tech creep. With the last 2 releases we're already begining to suffer the same situation.

The terribad options are no longer terribad, apart from the maleceptor.

But you dont have any shining star this is good kind of thing other than genestealers. Carnifexen are cheap but ineffective compared to dreadnoughts. Our MC killing machines aren't very killy. Our hordes outside of genestealers are a few pegs down other hordes. Our only unique abilities are Hive Commander and Mortal Wound spam.

Genestealers in large packs are devastating when podded next to swarmy specially if the flyrants can make it there also.

This is exactly right. I try not to do too much comparison, but there are multiple iterations across a variety of armies that fill the same role as our units that are just flat out better/cheaper/faster/stronger. In some cases all of the above.

Overall, I think that we got hyped because the book did improve, we didn't actually gain any ground against the meta in my area by a long shot though. I think this framework is fixable. Our MC's need to either get more survivable on average or cheaper, or both. Our hordes need the same. We need a boost in terms of raw, point efficient output of some kind otherwise my nids are back to being a beloved side project that I play against new players and friends who aren't rolling optimized lists.

Lictorshame was a 1-off thing as far as i could tell. He was having difficulty getting success from it before that, and it hasnt seen success since then.
