My understanding from those two bits was that his opponent had *decided* that his generically generic Space Marines would just for *today* become Salamanders specifically to counter the army which was to be played against. And there's your problem. You're adding info that wasn't stated and making an assumption that drastically changes the meaning of the entire conversation. Because yes, that's bad form (and actually illegal, really). But, what was actually said?
Oh, here is my fully painted <insert random generic Chapter name here> Marines. Today they're Salamanders.
That's it really. Now, that could be "Oh, I see you're running nids. (Hence) Today they're Salamanders". Or, far more likely (and not bad form at all), "Today they're Salamanders (because that's the army CT that I want to run and built my list around). Oh, I see you're running nids. Here's my list (with nothing changed)".
Salamanders are a good CT - arguably one of the best. As such, you'd expect to see them regardless of opponent. However (like, to an extent, all CT), they work best when you have a list built around them. They are also not in any way, shape or form a specific nid counter.
If we look at some other comments by malkyn:
But today I'm using the Salamanders Chapter tactics because I don't want to be a vanilla chapter" is, to me, a bit bogus.
Not complaining about tailoring. Complaining about people wanting to actually play their army how they want to play them, without being penalised for what colour they want to paint their army . Because that's quite literally what he said:
By choosing that army you accept the fact that they're vanilla and have nothing special going for them.
Not having a free special buff that everyone else gets, just because of how you want to paint/model/name etc your Chapter/Hive Fleet/Cult/roaming band of randoms is stupid, punishing and meaningless.
