I'm looking to get into 40k again and wanted to ask a question on how open list and other information is.

For example, if I had a death leaper in reserve would I have to declare it? Also would I have to openly nominte an enemy chatecter, or simply write it down in secret?

It might be that I've played too much Infinity, but giving out that sort of info seems odd to me!

There is no hidden info.

Your army list is open, so if he asks what you have you have to tell him.

To set Deathleaper in reserve you have to do so during deployment, and declare what is going in reserve.

Its After Me! requires a target, that once again must be declared.

The only way to get the drop on someone is if they forget or are not paying attention.

Hiding things in 40k is really bad form. You can't expect your opponent to know your army's rules and in friendly games you will swiftly become "that guy".

I completely agree, it is bad form to keep things from your opponent.
That being said unless they errata it so he can also deploy like a regular lictor he is so easy to kill with some lists.
Ow you have it in bubblewrap (for some armies quite hard, for guards, nids and orks easy as pie) guess i cannot deploy it within 6 out of melee, ow jeah I will commmit suicide now. They realised it would instantly die if the character boarded a vehicle or deep striked, but forgot that bubblewrap even 6 inch is really easy for those horde armies.

I'm just getting back into 40k, but my standard whenever I show up to a match is to hand the printed copy of my army to my opponent, let them look it over, and then keep it in a place we can both find during the game. I appreciate it when my opponent does the same. I only have time to really learn my army, not all the details of theirs, and it sucks to find out something game changing in the middle of a battle.

Army lists should always be on show for your opponent to read during the battle. If you've pre-arranged the battle before the day then I'd expect one to be clearly written up. If it an "on the night" build I'd expect pen and paper to be put to good use.

Consulting an army list is good for you and your opponent. It lets you put down quick notations of stat changes from upgrades you've bought so that you remember that your units have a bonus; it also lets you check that you have put everything on the board that you paid for in points. It's a very simple way to help avoid making mistakes (most "cheats" are mistakes - the game IS very complex and its easy to make mistakes) and helps cut down on any potential cheaters.

About the only time 40K has had information denial was with some editions and transport contents when you didn't have to declare which units were in which transport to your opponent. In those situations most required that you wrote it down on a separate bit of paper and put that covered (turned over) near the table. Then upon revealing what units were in a transport during the game you could produce the paper. This helped avoid people shunting units around in transports to the most advantageous position during the fight.



But yes in 40K its like chess; your opponent and you both have 100% knowledge of what the other has brought to the table. The strategy is then in dealing with how you battle your opponent; rather than what units they can surprise you with.

That's why I like battlescribe so much. All statlines and relevant rules on a page or two, as well as "proof" that your points are correct.

That's why I like battlescribe so much. All statlines and relevant rules on a page or two, as well as "proof" that your points are correct.

For some reason, I haven't been able to get battlescribe to work right for me. I need to play with it a bit more and figure it out someday.

I only do secret lists with good friends who have a decent grasp of the rules. Adds a twist to the game but I wouldn't do it, or ask for it, with strangers.

Change the last sentence of this ability to read: ‘At the end of any or your Movement phases Deathleaper can spring from its hiding place – you can set it up anywhere that is within 6" of the enemy Character you chose, but more than 1" away from any enemy models (if the enemy Character is not on the battlefield when Deathleaper is revealed, set it up anywhere on the battlefield that is more than 9" from any enemy models instead).’

(well, loses out on reroll charges. Oh well).

True. Just read they'd errata'd it so you could set up outside 9", but didn't properly read through what it actually fixed .
