Is the Pentyrant all we have left in the ITC meta?

This is something I'm having trouble accepting, but I feel it's inevitable. Our ground units don't stand a chance against the big boys on the block and it's getting worse with each new release. I've been running a fairly balanced list for the past year running 3 Flyrants and a Dule with some dwindling success. The common theme I'm noticing in my games is my opponent only needs to take down 1 of the 3 buzzards then mulch my ground forces to have the game in the bag as the remainder or my army (2 Flyrants) isn't enough to carry the weight.

We just don't have the volume of fire, mobility, or survivability on our ground units to use them as the competitive choice even with hundreds of points invested in shrouding tax. I understand a top heavy list has trouble with maelstrom but the other option vs an optimized army is being tabled.

Someone please point me in the direction of a Tyranid player who is beating top level competition with hooves on the ground soI can get away from the Pentyrant road I'm about to embark on until we get a new dex.

Im noticing the same thing. Against necrons especially. They just dont die, and while theyre busy shrugging off BLDev shots they still manage to annihilate anything on the ground. Last 3 games I played Flyrants were by and large ignored because they just cant make a dent.

I am not a fan of penta flyrant or the heiroduyle. Penta gives up ground game totally, and this works fine if you kill everything and drop on objectives last turn. probelm is actually killing everything, and with the new SM horde/tank/pod welfare lists, good luck.

Heiroduyle is too many points to just autoloose it to grav or S:D.

I do not have a much better solution to the problems we face though. I am looking at dual CAD, bastion/coms, 3 flyrants, four (or 5, points get slim here) mawlocks, and whatever else I can fit as my next list. 2 day tournament here in 4 weeks.

Very similar to what I'm juggling, I have 5 Flyrants, 6 Mawlocs and just finished my 3 crone/harpy conversions. How many of each is where I'm hitting a wall. I know crones are a thing of the past but I'm thinking they provide some pretty good tools for the meta and am going to give them a shot.

The 6 Mawloc, 2 Flyrant list I ran last tourney was fun and did ok my first 2 games but just got destroyed by IG. Drop pod with vets and meltas nuked my bunker first turn killing the Malanthrope inside, Wyverns worked the lictors with ease and the mawlocs were pretty much one and done as far as TFTD. Not enough tools in the box to kill pasks squadron and with psyker buffs it burned down the Flyrants pretty quick.

thanks man. it's a real shame we don't have true reserves manipulation in the codex. the counter-alpha strike game is kind of annoying me. so is a nearly mandatory bastion. at least the model is cheap?

for what it's worth, i have always had good success with crones, regardless of how much i (please do not swear) about them. i have had at least one in nearly every list for a long time now.

The new White Scar's Relic (20 pts for ignores cover and +1 BS to the unit) is going to make the Hierodule obsolete in competitive play. Grav is just too prevalent and too powerful against our MCs. A Centstar can now eliminate a GC per turn and now can auto ignore cover without needing to luck out on psychic.

I could be completely off base, but the way I see new releases the more I want to go absurdly mawloc heavy.

Like I threw together a test mawloc 2 detachment limit list(double CAD):

total:

3 flyrants, double devs, e-shock grubs

1 flyrant, double devs, no thorax biomorphs(needed 10 points, but this one would probably be my warlord)

4 mucolid mines

6 mawlocs

I feel like you can bait interceptor with the mines. And as unreliable as mawlocs are, if you have 6, even if half come in you should get 1 direct hit, and not all of them are likely to die before reburrow.

It doesn't answer against stuff like WK's, but hopefully you can blow apart any WG spam lists and try to dakka down any WK's fast(or in the case of IK haywire/fire at rear armor bomb).

I just don't know though. I play against some highly competitive lists among my friends who live about an hour away(I moved last January from that area) but my local meta is softer by comparison.

how are you baiting interceptor with mines? they don't have to choose what to shoot until the end of the movement phase. i'm not understanding what you're trying to do.

otherwise yeah i was looking at six mawlocks earlier, but want that bastion in too. the points get wonky.

Ideally the attempted bait would be resolving the mine DS first and getting it close to something where it's perceived as a higher threat. But frankly that's a gambit.

the points do get kinda wonky. In a 3 detachment or more scenario I'd probably drop the non-ES grubs flyrant, add a mawloc, and add a bastion.

you can DS in w/e order you want. they dont get to fire interceptor until the end of the movement phase, so they'll see everything you have on the board before getting to choose what to shoot at.

but, yeah. that's what i'm leaning towards: bastion, 3 flyrants, as many mawlocks as i can fit, and the spore mine formation.
