Tyrannocyte (drop pod) with or without 'legs'

Ok as I mentioned in another thread I stumbled upon the idea of a drop pod WITHOUT its legs, now hear me out, I don't mean we just stick the body on a base and say 'hey its a drop pod' I was thinking more along the lines of. instead of having it hover in the air as the kit portrays, we instead place it on the base, making new tentacles roaming out on the ground beneath it. 

I believe this could solve multiple problems with the model, simply by altering the kit slightly... if you have one try to look at it now...... now look just at the body NOT the legs its standing on.... even without those legs its still a HUGE model , by placing it closer to the ground it is more likely to apply the 25% requirement for a cover save.... this could turn our pods from useful troop deployment, into deployment AND cover...... not only that but we can still use those much needed legs for the mucolid spores that every tyranid player wants..... really wish i'd thought of this before I built my tyrannocyte........



so what does everyone think? have I just discovered a new way to get the most out of this brilliant kit? or is it a fools dream, easily destroyed by the designers?


if anyone attempts (or has attempted this) please show us,  would like to see how it works blocking a carnifex/ cargo from view.

It's what I did. I just built my two as sporocysts and no one cares that it is actually a tyrannocyte.

well to be a drop pod it does need to loose the chimney on top for a maw, and have the second half of the pod (unless you somehow made it look buried in the crust)

it really doesn't have to be modified much to be a passable proxy for either unit.

There's a real cool mod where a guy put lotus pods on to of his Sporocysts and they look fantastic. I bought a few packages to do this myself, costs peanuts.

yeah seen one of them, I am rubbish at doing bases so strongly considering this for my larger models, I mean if your careful u can cut up the pods and fit them on any base without loosing too much (needs to be dried pods of course)

no no, I mean literally he glued a lotus seed pod to the top of a Sporocyst and it was awesome.

My last one I'm working on may be what your talking about. I've cut the lower half at an angle so the entire thing will be at about 45*. Just trying to get enough cork to fill up the front part of the base to make it look like its' sunk in the earth. That was how I had my old mycetic spore. I'll try to post some pics this weekend.

In tournaments this is called modelling for advantage. I would probably be called out on it, if I were to take LOS-blocking Tcytes to our tournaments.
As they are, Tcytes block LOS to our FMCs but not to our ground units.

true, but I don't see why we'd get called out for it, in tournaments I've heard they are constantly encouraging customised models for the best painted etc categories, long as you use pieces from the kit provided, they can clearly see what it is, and it makes sense (unlike a hive tyrant the size of a venomthrope... OOP version) I can't see what they could complain about, otherwise tyranids could say "ok instead of being on flyer stands, i'll have my harpy/ crone, and gargoyles, modelling roosting on the ground"

I think it's pretty obvious that many players would have issues with 'special' pods completely blocking LOS to the Dakkafexes they drop. It's significantly better than just having a small chance to hand out a 5+ cover save.

Why? SM pods do the same thing if you glue the doors shut. There is no requirement for them to be open.

I was under the impression that SM drop pods always counted as being open for LOS issues.

it's *often* played like that (we even play it like that) but there's nothing in the rules that say so. if you're playing TLOS, you play TLOS. yes, it would hide things behind them, but then they'd be out of LoS to shoot as well. it's a two edged sword and as long as you're consistent with it, it really shouldn't be that big of a beef. YMMV of course, but by this same standard, every flyrant with balrog wings, and every FW flyrant is modeling for advantage too.
