What color should I paint my bases?

Hello everyone, I am pretty new to painting. I have decided to paint my swarm grey, with bone chittin/claws and I am going to try to do a blue glow effect on certain weapons/ zoanthrope heads. I was wondering what color to paint the gravel on the bases? I was thinking a desert Orange.

Just to let you know, I am red/green color blind so I am going to avoid those colors.

orange is a natural compliment to blue, so it should work out for you. keep your rim black, or paint it steel legion drab.

I agree desert orange would complement the overall scheme well, but I'd go for a dark brown rim personally as it would share some of the warmth in the orange in a way that black/grey wouldn't.

Whatever you go for post pictures once you've something to show!

I will. I still 60 gants/gaunts to put together, and then I will be base coating the little bugs first.

I am also going to be building a magnetic display board.

I alternate between browns, greys, and blacks. It helps make gribbly units distinct.

Great idea for a scheme.

Brown with bits of orange / brown is good. I use steel legion drab for the undercoat, wash with agrax earth shade then dry brush with zandri dust. For the Orange / brown areas I dab on steel legion (with a heavy laden brush) then pop a brush in Light Earth (Forge world) weathering powder and dab the dry powder on the wet steel legion spot. This results in spots that are dark brown with a nice orange rim. Have a peek at the Hive Fleet Icharus thread for an example.

Or you may want to try that technical orange flakey paint GW brought out for the mechanicum range, simple and works well.

Let me know if you'd like tips in bone carapaces, I have a few steps that seem to work ok. Best of luck with the gaunts!
