Hi everyone. Just wanted to share some thoughts I've had after a game I played last night against Chaos.
I'm a really bad general. After almost every game I play I go through the list of blunders and mistakes I made. So, instead of giving a list of things to do to make yourself a better commander...here's a list of things not to do:
1. Make plans before deployment. I'm terrible at this. I look at my opponents list, then look at my list, and immediately start making plans on what I'm going to do. Often I'll go through with said plans regardless of who goes first, who deploys on which side, and what terrain is available. It's always a bad idea. Don't do it.
2. Worry about tabling your opponent by turn 3. I often find myself thinking I've got a game in the bag by the end of round 2, only to get my butt handed to me by turn 6. I don't jink because I want to be able to get off maximum firepower. I don't fly off the board because I don't want to lose a turn of shooting (even when I know my opponent has stuff coming in from reserve...). I walk out into the open to hit a valuable target, and then get smoked the next turn because I don't have a cover save. Don't plan on a 3 turn game...plan for all 7!
3. Get so excited about the game that you forget about all of your options. I forget to do FNP rolls, forget to use psychic powers, forget to go to ground, etc. Over the course of a game, it adds up to a lot. It's a fun game, but letting that excitement get in the way of knowing your codex and the rules of the game will result in more losses than wins.
So, anyway, I had a lot of fun, but it frustrates me that I keep making the same mistakes after dozens of games. Hopefully you won't do the same!
