Hey!
It's been quite a long while since I've had an update. I've been in and out of gaming and hobbying over the last year or so, but with summer creeping nearer I'm starting to feel the bug (heh) once again.
Last July-ish or so, I was trying to paint up my dooders in time for a local tournament. I was mostly successful, and the tournament was a blast - even though I was utterly, pathetically, obliterated in game after game after game. The leap from casual, friendly games with close friends to strangers in a competitive tournament scene is rough, to say the least! My first match was against three Imperial Knights, a Scorpius(?) Whirlwind tank, and some drop pods full of minimum-size marine squads. Yikes. (I imagine this list isn't even all that beardy in the larger context of the game!)
The social aspect of each tournament I've attended has been rewarding, and well worth the entry fees, painting deadlines, and one-sided tabletop trouncing - it is fun to interact with other hobbyists, talk shop and all that good stuff - but each tournament reminds me how little I enjoy playing the game in a competitive setting. I'll stick to imbalanced narrative battles and 2nd edition games with miles of random tables and D23s and endless granular details, thanks! In all seriousness, though, my wife and I recently discovered the OnePage40k rules, and we're digging the quick, gritty games (and the alternating activation!)
Still, I had a good time (despite coming in dead last, haha) and I was able to soak up many welcome compliments on all my time spent hobbying. It was a "painted models only" event, and it was great to see the creativity on display - there were some really beautiful armies running around the hall.
Here's the single picture I took (for whatever reason...) Coincidentally, it's also from the only game where I was able to pull off a win, haha! Joking aside, this was a fun, close game. Imperial Guard vs Tyranids will always be one of my favorite iconic matchups. That "impact" feeling when your bugs hit their gunline...marvelous!
Fast forward about 10 months or so - I'm currently working on my winged Hive Tyrant. It's coming along nicely, but yeesh, I cannot comprehend how some of you lunatics find the patience to paint up 3-6 of these beasts. There's a lot of detail to cover - and wings, at least to me, are tough to get right! I'm going for a pallid, fleshy appearance on mine to compliment my Gargoyles and the soft bits on my Tervigon and Tyrannocyte.
I'm stoked with my base (I know this one is larger than the stock base - I'd like to say this decision was intentional, but this was the base the model was attached to when I bought it secondhand. Still, I can't imagine such an impressive creature on a 50mm base! When you take a melee Tyrant, Warriors, and a Haruspex, no one accuses you of modeling for advantage. )
Here's a couple more shots. You can see how far along I am, lots of spines and claws and small, sharp bits still to paint up.
Thanks for reading/looking! I'm feeling rather motivated, so I'm going to try and take pics of all of the things I've painted up over the last few months and post these up alongside my recent progress.
It's good to be painting again!
