Hi everyone,
While I played 40K a little bit back in 2005/2006, I only recently started collecting models again, and decided to go with my old favorite, the 'nids. My, how things have changed.
Anywho, I've played about ten matches since I started collecting again, most of which have been losses. Which doesn't bother me in itself, but the fact that they were almost total wipes without a real contest does bother me. So I'm hoping to gather some opinions on how to improve my army list.
My last crushing defeat was against a friend that plays IG and fielded a list of almost all tanks. It was a 1250pt battle, and I had an advantage from campaign rules (he had to start the battle with at least 20% of his forces in reserve) but I still lost pretty hard. Mostly because I prepared for an infantry-heavy IG list and brought knives to a gunfight. My list consisted of 2 full units of termagants, a unit of raveners, a dakka flyrant, a hive crone, biovores, warriors, zoanthropes, and venomthropes. His list consisted of two Wyverns, two Hydras, a command unit with Meltas in a chimera tank, 2 hellhounds, and 1-2 lehman russ tanks. There may have been some more armor on the field but I can't remember what exactly.
My biggest problem was with the stormshard mortar launchers on his Wyvern tanks, which anhialated my infantry, one unit at a time, ignoring cover and armor saves. I had a dakka flyrant and a hive crone on the map, but they had to take out a pair of hydras on turn 1 or they'd have been shot down pretty fast too, so by the time they got to the Wyverns I had lost most of my army.
For the upcoming battle, I suspect he'll field a similar army, perhaps with slightly more infantry. I have the following list in mind, but I'd appreciate opinions on whether it can handle the IG light infantry/heavy guns well, or if it will fail for reasons I can't anticipate. I'll point out that while I have plenty of most models, I'm lacking in flyers, so I can only field the flyrant and single hive crone atm as far as FMC's go.
1250pts
HQ: Flyrant with 2x devourers w/brainleech worms, regeneration, hive commander, 280pts
Troops: Termagaunts x10, 40pts
Warriors x 5, rending claws, Deathspitters, 1x VC, 205 pts (Getting outflank from hive commander)
Fast Attack: Hive Crone, 155 pts
Elites: Zoanthrope X2, 100pts
Zoanthrope x2, 100pts
Zoanthrope x1, 50pts
Hvy Support: Carnifex x2 with adrenal glands, 270 pts
My basic strategy is to reduce the effectiveness of his blast and template weapons by fielding a small number of harder-hitting units, rather than my usual swarm of gaunts, which I hope he'll expect more of. The flyrant should be able to take out something turn 1, and draw a good amount of fire-hopefully the carnifexes can get into charging range and start ripping up his units. (I imagine the hellhounds will be up front like last time.) The warriors can arrive by outflank and hopefully get off some DS shots against rear armor, maybe causing a few glances and getting a charge the next turn if they survive. Finally, I'm hoping the zoanthropes can keep the other units alive with catalyst or by using paroxism on enemy units, and maybe they can provide anti-armor support by spamming warp lances if they get in close enough.
I was thinking about switching out the warriors for a genestealer squad, since it'd be cheaper, and wouldn't require Hive Commander. I don't know if 16 deathspitter shots are likely to make a difference, especially once he's turned his vehicles around, but I figure it could help draw attention at least. I also have 2x hive guard I could throw in there, but I haven't had much luck with them in the past. (4x shots equates to maybe 1 hp off the front armor of his vehicles.)
Any general advice would be welcomed. Thank you!
