Alright... *putting on glasses and getting serious and putting my friendly face on*
A week or so ago I started a thread called "What's with the hate" and this week another thread started with the title "nids are good enough damnit" and both those threads really were about how nids were bad and why.
Why were the threads about this? Because I myself asked for it in my thread. But someone mentioned that these threads should be focussing on the positive sides of the codex, we all know (well, plenty of us know) the negative things so let's do this once more, with (positive) feeling.
I would like to know how you play, and how the nids work for you
- Do you often play in tournaments? - Which type of army you usually run, and why? - What missions are usually played (maelstrom vs eternal war) and point values - Your local meta (as this will affect your army building) - Which units do you never leave for battle without?
Do you like to run lots of shrikes, Raveners and lictors? Tell me! How do you make it work?
Is your "go to-monster" the tyrannofex? Why? Let me know how you make it work!
Do you run double primes and never use flyrants? How's that working out?
Do you run 3 flyrants, 4 crones and a Harridan in all your games? Why? Does it work?
Personal attacks and rudeness are not welcome in this thread (and apologies if I've done any of the two in previous threads).
Let's talk about the bugs! Once more, with feeling.

I play regularly in UK tourneys (done 6 GTs in the last year) generally come top half.
Since 7th dropped I have solely played 'Nids as they are the book I am most comfortable with and had all the models to experiment.
I currently have been running a two flyrant 3 tyrannofex list with living artillery and lots of warrior broods.
It's worked really well and only been beaten with top lists eg/ bike star and jetseer/beast pack. We have been playing dual eternal war missions currently.
The meta I play in is UK top end I've played some of the top player in the country in the last few events. It's pretty much the kind of horrendous you hear about on the net but truthfully we tend to get the top builds over here very quickly, I assume this is to do with top ETC players going to all the events due to smaller travel times.
My go to beast is the tyrannofex, I use three with two templates each. I push them forward for great a great board control speed bump and to keep the game winning parts of the army safe from harm.
Obviously the Flyrants are the all stars but we knew that all ready.

Answers and stuff!
1 - Yes I play in as many tourneys as I can here. But Calgary Area doesn't have much. 2 - Um Tyranids.... 3 - A mix of both Maelstrom/EW. And 1850 seems to be the norm here. 4 - Lots of Spese Mareens. 5 - Flyrants
6 - I wish I could run them. I've ran the Deathleaper but just for fun games as he is plenty fun. Especially in Maelstrom Missions where he can be whereever you need him to be most of the time.
7 - No. Flyrant. Moar Flyrants. Tyrannofex's are nice since they can take a beating, but I don't find they are too useful, make their points back or not that fun to play with either.
8 - All times I've ran Primes they've died horribly unceremonial deaths from angry shooting.
9 - I wish. 2 Flyrants, 1 crone, 2 Harpies are my "go to". I am still whoreing myself out for cash for a Harridan so I don't know how well they work. But the others work really well. Flyrants and Crone can make other flyers cry, and HVC Harpies make non AV14 Vehicles strip HPs quicker than dancer a bachelor party.
10 - Can I emotionally attack people in this thread? What about spiritually? existentially?

I run a semi-horde list from 500 - 1850 points.
Swarmlord, Flyrant, hive guard, zoanthropes, and warriors are the keys to my army. Venomthropes i try to squeeze one or two in every list simply because they add an insane amount of defenses if you can deploy in ruins. and we have a lot of ruins.
I face plenty of armor, plenty of troops with mixed armor values, a few flyers. However I have never faced a tau opponent, nor a flyer spam list.
I love running big units and buffing them up with swarmy, i also really rock in the new psychic phase since i take swarmlord and zoans. only grey knights give me trouble in it. This usually ends up with really close games and about a 50% win ratio. Against the necron players DS Monoliths list i have never won, same for my friends space wolves list.
Never underestimate 40+ shots with preferred enemy. and never underestimate 30 hormagaunts with furious charge. (90 hits S4) With few flyers in the sky my harpy is usually free to wreak havoc on my enemies. Almost everything can be pinned, and stranglethorn cannon + barbed strangler will usually pin a unit or 2 per game. I also don't need to spend the extra points on a crone, because they don't have enough to shoot.

For me, gaming where I live has Died. Dead, No body plays. Me and my son finally are starting to play again, but with home made rules now since he doesn't like 40K rules. So I can't really say what I play or how. So for FEELING, I will say this. I have said this as a Dark Angel player in the Bolter and Chainsword forums, but I believe it applies here as well. I believe I can say this applies to some other people here as well. I am a Tyranid. I am a Nid. I love Tyranids because I love their fluff. I love the stories. I love the ideas of what a Tyranid can be. I love the miniatures. I love how they can be painted in any way you want and it usually works no matter what scheme you do. I love how customizable I can make the minis. I can make my own version and vision. I love how you can play so many ways with Tyranids. Shooty, Assaulty, Hordy, or a few Elite Monstrous Creatures. Or a combination of them all. While a lot of the play style may not mean it's efficient in game play wise, we still have the option to do so. I don't need to win with plastic toy soldiers. I can have fun with my Nids. I can have PRIDE with my Nids. To be a Tyranid player you are not a Win at all costs. To be a Tyranid player means you don't have to win with plastic toy soldiers all the time. To be a Tyranid player means you are NOT a Flavour of the Month player. A Tyranid player plays for the love of the game, fluff and history. While we may not be the strongest, the best or the easiest army to play, we still play. We play for Fun. We play for the excitement of the battles we can create and go Nom Nom Nom in our head. I am Tyranid.

Club play and local tournies whenever I can take a Saturday away from the wife and kids.
My seventh edition core is 2 dakka flyrants with egrubs and hive com. A tervigon with CS, egrubs and CCs and a 30 gaunt squad with 10-20 devourers.
Orks are my secondary army.

- Do you often play in tournaments?
I am actually playing in one now but it's my first so no. - Which type of army you usually run, and why?At the moment I don't have more than 1 of anything except for having two Warrior broods and 2 Fex - What missions are usually played (maelstrom vs eternal war) and point valuesI have played Maelstrom my last few games and far prefer it. Gun-line armies can't just sit at the back against us now. Fantastic. All games have been either 1500 or 1750. - Your local meta (as this will affect your army building)Huge number of players in my area, so a large skill range. I just try to keep a balanced force at the moment. - Which units do you never leave for battle without? All of them! I only have around 1800 of models in total Do you like to run lots of shrikes, Raveners and lictors? Tell me! How do you make it work?I liked Shrikes in 2nd as I could give them extended carapace. Now I see them as pointless. Raveners I never liked in 2nd as i preferred 'leaping Warriors' which sadly don't exist anymore. Still, +5 save makes them never worth considering still. I LOVE Lictors. They're a Predator rip off, and I am obsessed with them! I only have one at the moment so just DS him onto objectives. Is your "go to-monster" the tyrannofex? Why? Let me know how you make it work! No I don't have one and frankly don't think I will bother getting one either. Just doesn't appeal to me. Do you run double primes and never use flyrants? How's that working out? I play with 1 of each actually. I like both. Having my Prime inside a 30 strong Guant brood makes him super durable and means one less unit I have to have a Synapse worry for. Armed with the Miasma cannon he kills troops every game. Do you run 3 flyrants, 4 crones and a Harridan in all your games? Why? Does it work?
Erm no. I only own 1 Flyrant. I am currently painting my first Crone and do not have any LoW stuff Read more: thetyranidhive.proboards.com/thread/47310/more-feeling?page=1&scrollTo=804062#ixzz38uJMbO00

- Do you often play in tournaments? not as often as i'd like. we're gearing up for brawl in the fall though, which is what i'm focused on right now.
- Which type of army you usually run, and why? i'm a fan of tyranids (skyblight/skyblight light), BA stormraven/LR, CSM/daemons, pod C:SM
- What missions are usually played (maelstrom vs eternal war) and point values 1850 eternal war. everyone here hates maelstrom as written in the BRB, waiting to see if they're going to follow BAO and do a modified 2 objective maelstrom along with the standard missions.
- Your local meta (as this will affect your army building) wide variety. lot of SM, lot of eldar. IK starting to show up. the guys i have been playing with personally are very soft though. me and bigpig live in the same area though, just didn't realize it until now...we need to get some games going on.
- Which units do you never leave for battle without? flyrants.
Do you like to run lots of shrikes, Raveners and lictors? Tell me! How do you make it work? i subbed in some raveners for a 'fun' list towards the end of 6th. RC/SF, unit of six iirc. i think i dropped a terv for them? still brutal, because my opponent was derp and let me charge him instead of just leaving. raveners really mess bikes up, when they can catch them. so sad.
Is your "go to-monster" the tyrannofex? Why? Let me know how you make it work! love the tfex, though he got some usefulness removed with the smash nerf. 2+ armor, 2+ cover w/ venoms and ruins. acid spray, egrubs, and AG to get through terrain and make sure i don't get bogged in terrain for 3 turns, though i may just be over-preparing there, that's actually happened to me with two tfexes in the same game and cost me last tournment i went to.
Do you run double primes and never use flyrants? How's that working out? no, but i can't see that working out well. even putting them (the primes) with malanthropes or in a blob squad, flyrants bring too much to the table. primes just aren't offensively equivalent.
Do you run 3 flyrants, 4 crones and a Harridan in all your games? Why? Does it work? i don't own a harridan or 4 crones (though i have enough stuff to proxy it all). 3 flyrants though, oh yes. harridan should be pretty beast, especially now that the grounding rules are sane. i dunno i would run 4 crones though.

- Do you often play in tournaments?
Yes lots. I used to be a whfb player....then moved to nids... for a while hated the deldar army with a vengeance... would reach the semi finals and guess what, i get to go against deldar. Mind you this was in the 5th ed era before fliers were cool...the venoms were murder haha. Played my first grand tourney 3 years ago and reach the final table going against a leaf blower ig list. (please do not swear)
- Which type of army you usually run, and why?
After nids got necron cause they looked cool... And i wanted to get back at them deldars. True enough necron firepowet broke the deldars but now for some reason had a Hard time this time vs sm armies oh well.... Back to nids
- What missions are usually played (maelstrom vs eternal war) and point values
2t.... Maelstrom all the way unless preset scenarios drong tournies... We will be having a 8 week campaign starting next week so...
- Your local meta (as this will affect your army building)
Vehicles are coming back. Strong builds for eldar and sm drop grav units. Ik are popular here as well
- Which units do you never leave for battle without? Flyrants....and still love crones

Great to read this stuff!
I also realize one of my questions were badly phrased.
Let's change the "What type of army do you usually play" into "What type of Tyranid army do you usually play?"

This here is why I love this forum. The fact we can have these threads and positively discuss everything in a mature manner. I know this codex is bland, but for me personally, I love the Tyranids a lot, and will do everything I can to enjoy playing this army. Appreciate your optimism atrocity. - Do you often play in tournaments?I have yet to play in a real tournament. I have played with my gaming group in our own little mini tournament though. Tournament scene in Nova Scotia (Canada) is kind of scarce, aside from the GW store. (It is a hour drive away from me unfortunately)- Which type of army you usually run, and why?I tend to try and mix up my army on a continuous basis, as I try to use as many of my models as I can. Typically however, most of my lists consistently contain a few or most of these units; Tyrannofex, Flyrant, Biovores, Tervigon. I do try to play without my flyrant quite often though, as it is a nice challenge, and when it pays off, it feels very satisfying. - What missions are usually played (maelstrom vs eternal war) and point valuesIn my group, we play Maelstrom and Eternal War equally. We used to run mostly 1250 or 1500 Pt matches, but since 7th dropped, we have started playing 1750 or 2000 Pt matches.- Your local meta (as this will affect your army building)My meta consists of Eldar, Astra Militarum, Dark Eldar, and Tau. , not the best match ups for Nids aha, but it challenges me constantly and we always have close games.- Which units do you never leave for battle without?Answered above, but most lists include a few or most of the following units; Tyrannofex, Flyrant, Biovores, Tervigon.- Do you like to run lots of shrikes, Raveners and lictors? Tell me! How do you make it work?I don't own any Shrike models, or any Lictors unfotunately (Lictors are next up for my Nid purchases once I finish painting my Ultramarines). I do own a brood of Raveners and absolutely love them (model wise that is...rules on the other hand are face palmed). The few times I have run Raveners, I have ran them with Swarmlord. Simply just due to him having a large synapse range, and the ability to give them furious charge, which has helped a bit. Ravs are just really hard to use, but going in, you need to understand that and not set hopes super high.- Is your "go to-monster" the tyrannofex? Why? Let me know how you make it work!He is indeed my go to-MC. I run him with Acid Spray and Electroshock grubs, and if the points can be spared, adrenal glands (Though I now use these points to put crushing claws onto my Tervigon with nerfs to smash). The T-fex is literally our living battering ram (Sorry ol Carnifex, but the T-fex has you beat in this category ), and I rarely ever see him die, which is amazing because he is always at the spear head of my force usually. The nerfs to smash suck, but I find just not smashing gets you better results now, with just hoping for those few PEN rolls. He is great at anti-vehicle, as well as being a BEAST at anti-infantry (Especially against Xenos armies).- Do you run double primes and never use flyrants? How's that working out?I have never run duel Primes. I do try to swap out my Flyrants for Terv/Prime combo, or to use Swarmlord for fun.- Do you run 3 flyrants, 4 crones and a Harridan in all your games? Why? Does it work?Have never done this, as I only own 1 Crone and 1 Flyrant... for now.

- A few months ago I would have said no, but I'm actually in my 3rd tournament in a row at my local GW. - My usual Tyranid list is around 1500 and features a few classics like a flyrant and a pair of devilfexes. It also has some unusual units like shock hive guard. - Since 7th, I've played 100% maelstrom of war, usually 1500 to 1850 points. - My local meta is full of Marines, Necrons and a few Orks. Makes things tricky as you get a bit of everything to deal with. - Every list starts with my flyrant, Devilgaunts and a troop Tervigon. I try to squeeze in devilfexes whenever possible. I bring a LOT of dakka. I also never leave home without my crone. I'm sure you're wondering about the shock hive guard... As I often face a vehicle heavy necron list, they actually do really well. My opponent will even try to actively avoid them really helping me control the field.

I've actually had my eye on the schock-hive guard as well, just to keep pesky command barges away from my deployment zone!

- Do you often play in tournaments? Yearly or bi-yearly at GW Official ones, but so far never with my Nids! Amoungst my gaming group - its more regular and I use my Nids, and I have a good win ratio
- Which type of army you usually run, and why? Spawn Horde 2x Flyrants, 2+ Tervigons, Lots of Devilgaunts (40+), Lots of Zoanthropes (Individually to gain the big Psychic Pool) Lots of Hive Guard, a Fex and Trygons and Ive been Dabbling with the Living Artillery Node recently with mixed results. The Fex does better than the Trygons do these days, but both units are targetted early.
- What missions are usually played (maelstrom vs eternal war) and point values
1500 to 2000 and Eternal War. When we played Eternal War we realised quickly that it was more about Lucky draws than anything else.
- Your local meta (as this will affect your army building) Marines - Lots of Marines. Crimson Fists, Space Wolves, Chaos Space Marines, Tzeench Themed, Khorne Themed and Slaaneshi Themed (I own the Nurgle Force) Guard Eldar and now Necrons (Only 1 game in and 1 loss!)
- Which units do you never leave for battle without? Tervigons: Bertha, Black Betty and Dumpling!
Do you like to run lots of shrikes, Raveners and lictors? Tell me! How do you make it work?
I hate Gargoyles with a passion, from Painting them, to making them stand up. Rules whise they are alright, but a pain to use so I avoid them. I Own no Raveners so dont use them, and my Warriors are a mix of CC and Shooting.
Is your "go to-monster" the tyrannofex? Why? Let me know how you make it work! Tervigon. I hide at least one of them at the back for Back field Synapse, and Objective control. One or more will move forward cautiously spewing the little buggers out. Ive outflanked the Devilgaunt Units and they are nasty
Do you run double primes and never use flyrants? How's that working out? Nope - Primes are just too expensive for what they do.
Do you run 3 flyrants, 4 crones and a Harridan in all your games? Why? Does it work?
2 Flyrants yes! They come in, cause terror and shoot stuff. Then they shoot stuff, and after that they shoot stuff.

I'm going to just answer in paragraph form so it doesn't feel like school assignment or work report. Having just finished grad school I have only managed 1 tournament in the last year though I regularly face tournament players. I have been able to get away for a game, just not a whole day or more. I realize this could skew my perceptions as I usually don't face the finalized lists but the experimental ones instead. Due to that I see more variety than many others. Since I'm also not facing the optimized list I may have more success than I would find at tournaments. I actually enjoy the experimental role as it keeps me on my toes trying to adapt to what I'm facing. I face Space Marines, Space Wolves, Tau, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Necron, Orks, Imperial Guard, Chaos Space Marines, a smattering of Dark Angles (but not that often) some Daemons, and a little Blood Angels.
My go to for MCs in Dakkafexes. I like the tyrannofex, but the dakkafex is better all around in a wider variety of situations. I try to almost always fit in a brood of 3. Dakkafexes no longer have the reputation they used to and for some unknown reason my opponents don't focus on them nearly enough. Most people go for the flyrants and crones as top priority.
2 Flyrants almost always. At least one Venomthrope. Typically 2 Zoans. And MSU warriors. Lately I've been doing 2x 3 Hive Guard.
