Not a Fan of Maelstrom missions from a competitive stand point.
I did though want to test play playing against Knights and test play Cleanse and Control as they are using this Maelstrom mission as the first game in a local Tournament I'm attending next month.
The other 4 games are Eternal war missions.
The structure is 1 primary detachment 1 Allied detachment.
Formations are in, 1850.
I'm currently running Skyblight:
Flyrant Dual Devs, Electroshock Grubs 240
Flyrant Dual Devs, Electroshock Grubs 240
3 Warriors 90
3 Warriors 90
30 Termagants, 1x Devourer 124
1 VenomThrope 45
1 VenomThrope 45
1 Biovore 40
1 Biovore 40
1 Biovore 40
Skyblight Formation:
Flyrant Dual Devs, Electroshock Grubs 240
10 Gargoyles 60
10 Gargoyles 60
10 Gargoyles 60
Hive Crone 155
Harpy Venom Cannon 140
Harpy Venom Cannon 140
1849
I'm not going to do a complete battle report but I do have a few thoughts on the game.
I'll also leave you with some pictures below as the guys Knights are very impresssive and well painted.
The game itself pretty much went like this:
I went first, killed a knight and scored 2 Objective cards putting me on 3 points.
His turn 1, He kills a few bits here and there and scores 1 Objective card putting him on 1.
I think I picked up a couple more points turn 2.
I'm pretty sure it was this turn or perhaps turn 3 where he got the card where you gain 6 points if all mysterious objectives have been revealed plus potentially another point from an objective.
It was here that he edged forward by around 3 points.
My draws weren't fantastic, I managed to pick up a point here and there.
I did manage to pickup and complete 2 cards which would have given me D3 objectives but I rolled a 1 for both.
They were easily completed also so it was down to luck to just roll 2 or 3 points from those cards which could have meant a draw/win.
I managed to kill 3.5 of his Knights, first blood and line breaker but the final score was 14 - 12 in his favour.
I just couldn't catch up due to that turn where he scored 6-7 points.
I enjoyed the game but it was a bit of an eye opener concerning Maelstrom missions and the fact I'm going to have to play one of these missions in a competitive environment.
Flyrants were boss pretty much, Harpies/Crone didn't do that much as you can imagine.
Gargoyles are fun to deep strike for those objectives, coming back a few times was a bonus.
I think I'll use more of a blocking strategy if I play against Knights again to kill their movement a little.
It was a good test though, I was surprised to kill a knight turn 1. I was lucky with Onslaught which allowed to get to the side of it with 2 Flyrants which helped a lot.
Thanks for the game Dave!
