So, got the inspiration for this from Malebranche's thread dealing with allies and the benefits of combinations. I have been refining this, and I think I can do what I want for only 170 pts.
DE Allies:
Humonculous + Crucible of Malediction 70pts
3 wracks 30pts
Raider + Torment Grenade + Eathersails 70pts (This gives you an overall 'attack' move of 12+2d6+18"; should be able to hide and still reach anywhere)
(This assumes you are alreadly playing with 2 flyrants in your primary detachment)
When you want to ‘attack’, you fly up both flyrants to cover as many psykers in SitW as you can (12” radius), you then fly up and center the raider to cover as many psykers as you can. (6” radius”). Activate the Crucible (3d6” range)
NOTE: Your flyrants can also be harmed by the crucible, so you *really* need to be careful about range and placement. There is only a 1/12 chance of badness, but better to not take the chance if you can avoid it.
If it works out right, all of those psykers will need to take a Ld test or be removed. Those in the center will be at -4, the rest at -3.
Even Ld 10 psykers are likely to fail, but there are a lot of Ld9 and Ld8 psykers….. This would completely gut a jet seer council, remove almost all of the heralds from screamerstar, even models like Demon Princes and Fateweaver could just go ‘poof’.
If you run across armies with only a couple of psykers… play it a bit more cautiously, don’t just charge forward right away. The beauty is even if there are no enemy psykers, it is only 170 pts, and you still get 2 super scoring units, and a Dark Lance.
This will work best the first time, but even if they know about it…. they can’t risk moving forward until the threat has been dealt with. And with your range… that is hard. At best they will need to spread out, which may allow you time to pick them off piecemeal.
Variant 1: This could also work with 1 flyrant and Deathleaper, or with 2 flyrants and death leaper if you go double FOC. The extra -D3 Ld to one model will really make it a long shot to survive.
Variant 2: The flyrants are great because you want them anyway, and because they can move 24". But if you use something like Shrikes, they will not have to worry about being affected by the crucible. If you like to run Shrikes, the option is worth keeping in mind. (hat tip: Malebranche)
Variant 3: For another 100pts, you can grab another raider/wrack combo which will allow you to expand the -1Ld area. Don't think it is worth the points, but you can keep it in mind.
This tactic relies on the raider moving 12” + 2D6, then moving flat out, and then activating the crucible. This is legal because Flat Out prevents shooting, and the crucible is not shooting. But it may catch some folks by surprise. Just be prepared to explain the rules to them.
