Current Project Build: Fill That Empty Board!!!

Alright, Hive, I've scoured the forums, and have absolutely fallen in love with Orphenox's work on his buildings (http://thetyranidhive.proboards.com/thread/46099/tyranid-infested-buildings-marine-statue), and I wanted to do something similar. I took his advice on the modelling, but am NOWHERE near as skilled as he is, so I took the cheaper way. I bought a $4 foamcore board from Wal-Mart, chopped it to the dimensions of an existing building we had at our store, and BAM! easy-peasy buildings. Add Orphenox's flair from insulation foam and hot glue, and Voila! The start of a Tyranid-overrun cityscape.





I LOVE The way the foamcore board makes it look like blown apart plascrete, but the one thing I can't decide or figure out how to do is the gribbly flesh covering everything. I like the pinkish-purple Orphenox used, but I kinda wanted a reddish, or red-purple look to it.

I liked the way that the Tyranid creep turned out that I decided to build some area terrain, or objective markers out of them as well. I'll be making the sprue-cut crystals glow a green or blue,  but the same problem arises with what to do with the creep?

If you want red why not do a deep red thru mid red with just a hint of orange? Maybe use GS to make some very tiny veins on everything to pick out with the orange.

Update! I experimented with different combinations, and chose one that was quick an effective for me.

RESULTS!!





Kinda blurry on the special details, but it was primed black, a Khorne Red undercoat, Screamer Pink dry brush layer, Emperor's Children dry brush highlights, a layer of 'Ard Coat to give it a slimy feel, and a light finish with the Emperor's children to bring out the depth.

A little easier to see on my now completed objective markers/area terrain!





All there's left to do now is to add another layer to the crystals, and paint the rippers.

I really like your drooping tendrils, almost like creepers. The objective markers look particularly disgusting. I'm pretty sure thats what you were going for so its full of win! \o/

Yeah, the goal was for a creeping mass overtaking and absorbing the energy from the crystals. A lot of people I've shown these to think that they are little brains, so i guess i could use them as little hive nodes that are in the Altar of War missions or something.

OH MY GOD this just made my week! Looks fantastic man, im glad you liked the technique! Looking forward to seeing more. Love the objective markers too that's a really good idea

I know, I know... This post is about 6 months late, but these look excellent! Have you ever thought about painting on a gloss-coat on the alien gunk? It really makes alien stuff look THAT much more disgusting. I have been contemplating an alien infested table for awhile and this has really helped me realize the potential in hot-glue tentacles.

Wow I literally JUST came back onto this site tonight, and thank you! I know it's difficult to see, but yes, all of the goop is covered in 'ardcoat. I painted up a haruspex the same way, and I think the mouth bits on mine look better than the GW stock model. I'll find an image here...
