Reaper vs. Lashwhip and Bonesword

So I've noticed many people using the Reaper on their Flyrants but not many lash and boneswords and I'm curious why.  both increase/decrease initiative exactly the same, both cause insta death on 6.  Is it really worth all those extra points for shred and the added strength?  In my opinion I'd rather be shooting with my nids anyways but if I decided to give one a weapon, I'm not sure I'd waste all those points on it.

The reroll from shred increases you wound chances, which by extension add the chance of rolling more 6's. I personally have only run the Reaper twice, I prefer Dakka but I am going to test the template/Reaper combo soon.

Yeah had this happen to me last week. Why isour Tyrant only i5?

GW just hate close combat Nids. A flying Dakkarant laughs a Bloodthirster off the table, while being 20 points cheaper.

how about daemon princes.. I face these guys all the time with their 3+, 5++ rerollable 4+ FNP and It will not Die. oh yea and sometimes iron arms. Those things laugh a dakkarant off a table.

I can only think of two benefits that you can get from running with the Reaper on a tyrant.

1) Combine it with adrenal glands to get str 8 on the charge for instant death against MEQ to deny them any FNP with your full 6 attacks.  Not too useful as you can smash and get 4 attacks on the charge.

2) Assaulting a wraithknight/lord. You reroll anything that isn't a 5 or 6 because you want to get a 6 since it will instant death the thing.

Against anything with toughness 6 or less, you get your rerolls to wound with toxin sacs which are cheaper to get then the reaper.

Not really that worth it IMO.

A Reaper is the same points as Bonesword + Lash Whip with Toxin Sacs and Adrenal Glands, but you trade Fleet for permanent Strength 7 and having double the chance to cause instant death against Toughness 8. On a walking Hive Tyrant it's a bad trade because you need Fleet, on a flying one Fleet is unnecessary so the Reaper is a much more attractive option.

i'll reaper/dakka my skyblight tyrant, because (please do not swear) WK, seriously. and if there aren't any WK/RT, then it can be my troubleshooter/danger close flyrant, still has one set of leeches/thorax/VS so it's not like its as much of wash.

I think a Bloodthirster or DP should kill a Tyrant in close combat. Those are supposed to be the biggest cc bad-asses in the game. This version of the Lash Whip is generally better in most situations, however. It's not like anyone played a cc Tyrant in the previous edition anyway; not if they wanted to win.

As many have pointed out, a shooty Tyrant knocks them out anyway, so it's really a pretty fair trade. Can't be better at both things for cheaper.

This version of the Lash Whip is generally much worse in most situations. Tyrant Guard with Lash Whip and the Swarmlord? old Lash Whip was better. Multi-assaulting with Lash Whip in one unit? Old one was better. Charging into difficult terrain? Old one was better. Fighting a Daemon Prince or other fast combat beast? Old one was better. Fighting anything with less than initiative 8? It's a wash. Fighting so many Initiative 6-8 models that you can't get into b2b with all of them? New Lash Whip is better.

The funny thing is.. Even Bloodthirsters (who are I9 not 10, Skarbrand and Keeper of Secrets are only I10,) trip over rocks going into combat. Tyrants hit the same time as Daemon Princes, unless they are Warp sped. Also Daemons CAN get grenades for the turn from their Skull Cannon.

Scything talons are just a fancy name for ccw with AP6 now, rending is still just as unreliable as ever, and the other three entries all involve whips and swords. This should be an indicator that our army is too soft to handle melee. I wouldn't bother with either one anymore unless you take skyblight.

A Flyrant on the ground is just a bad idea. Just kite and shoot worms. Same as last edition..
