Zeb ran. He ran faster than he had ever ran in his life. Fear and instinct fuelled his flight. Zeb didn't know where he was within the sprawling Hab Centre's winding corridors, nor did he know in which direction he was heading, yet he still ran. He had to run, to get away from all the blood.
The blood. There was so much blood. He could still see Alexia's perfect, porcelain face pulled into an expression of sheer terror, a trail of deep crimson running down into her piercing eyes. He could still see the nightmare given form that hung over his love, that clutched her in clawed hands in a sickening parody of a lovers embrace. The creature's shadowed head terminated in a mass of writhing tendrils that were burrowed deep inside the back of Alexia's cranium, sucking wetly, staining her blond hair.
Zeb had stood immobilized with horror in the open doorway, staring in disbelief at what he saw. The only source of light was the pale glow of the moon streaming through the Hab's small window, casting the scene in a lambent glow that lengthened shadows. The monster raised its head slowly as it registered this newcomer, this witness to a killer's most intimate moment. With the caution of a stalking predator the creature slowly began to rise. Taloned, mantis-like upper limbs unfurled and flexed in anticipation of a fresh kill. Black, alien eyes flashed with malevolence as the monster sized up this new prey.
Zeb couldn't move. His limbs had frozen from the ice that flowed through his veins and his thoughts had numbed and slowed to a crawl. He stared silently into Alexia's eyes, transfixed by the pain and terror he saw within the depths of those Ocean blue orbs.
A sickening squelch cut through the pregnant silence as the monster's tendrils withdrew from the girl's skull, slick with gore and stuck with chunks of pink brainmatter. Alexia's eyes blinked at the retreat of the intruder from her violated mind and her body slumped lifelessly to the floor.
Suddenly, Zeb was free from Alexia's paralyzing gaze and his mind sparked into life, the suppressed instincts and emotions thundering through his soul. He turned and he ran. He ran as fast as his sweat coated limbs would carry him. He ran from Alexia's accusing eyes, he ran from the blood, but most of all he ran from the silent monstrosity that desired nothing more than to devour his mind.
Not very long I know, but it is intended to be a prologue to a larger story.
Any thoughts/feedback?
Cheers.
