After 13 games, I have revised my opinion of the Tyranid codex.
Previously I thought it was weaker than 5th Edition codex; now I suspect it's a little bit stronger. And while I wouldn't claim it's awesome, I am beginning to think it's not as terrible as I thought. In some strange way, it matches the theme of the Tyranids adapting, because the new strengths come more from the metagame than the codex itself.
(As always, my game environment will be different from yours. This is from my own experience only)
1) The Haruspex really isn't all that bad, it's more sort of average. This is almost entirely from the fact that it takes an elite slot, and is therefore one more MC. It's yet another T6 monster that your opponent needs to shoot at, besides the ones you already have in heavy, fast attack, HQ, etc.
While my Haruspex never closed with a vehicle, and the tongue attack was stupid, it did manage to annoy heavy infantry. In particular Terminator squads (don't forget the acid blood is AP 2 as well).
2) The warriors are oddly more viable. Nothing to do with their stats or options. I think it's just that people have begun to rely more on infantry than vehicles - almost no one wants to bring a land raider or predator where I play. As such, the environment now has more autocannons, heavy bolters, etc. than lascannons or other uber-strength weapons. The fact that warriors are less likely to be insta-killed, just by virtue of the loadouts I'm encountering, makes them a bit more viable than before.
3) Many of you will disagree with this, but I feel the lash-whip / bonesword is a better choice than the devourers, even with the Tyrant's new BS. On more than one occasion, a lucky nick by a bonesword has insta-killedWraithknights and Riptides. There's no real worry about needing something to pop vehicles either, as Hive Guard and Exocrines have that covered. The crones also slam vehicles to pieces with their vector strike, so I almost never had to pop behind something to fire devourers at it.
Anyway, see (2) about vehicles.
4) It's pretty expensive - but if you give your Flyrant the Ymgarl Factor so it's armour save can drop to 2+, you can really piss people off in close assault. Try at least once for entertainment value.
5) The Exocrine's AP 2 weapon seems to be exactly what we needed. Along with a potential BS 4, Exocrines coupled with Hive Guard means 'Nid shooting isn't half as horrible as most people claim.
