Combo found: Trigon Prime + Reaper of Obliterax

While trying to find a good combo I think I finally found one: Trigon Prime + Reaper of Obliterax.

Looking at what you get when combining Toxin sacs, a trigon prime and the Reaper for 275pts (10ptsn less than Swarmlord).

You get +1A for two CC weapons, +3I from Swiftstrike, you get +1S, you get ID on a 6 to wound and shread.

So:

Ws5 Bs3 S7 T6 W6 I7 A6 Ld10 Sv5

Reroll all fail to wounds
AP:2 from being an MC


Looks like a bit of a monster to me when you toss in deepstrike, synapse and it's gun.

You can buff it more, but it is pricy now.

Edit: Misread shred. Took off toxin sacs and got rid of the reroll to hits.

Looks neat in CC, it's not a character though so it can't issue challenges, I can't imagine how this thing could make it across the board alive either. My big question though is how are you rerolling all fail to hits?

Where do you get re-roll fail to hit? Poison is re-roll fail to wound and so is shred

However I would just deepstrike it. Right now I am working on a quasi-null deployment list.

For 25 points less, Toxin Sacs and Maw Claws of Thyrax is a pretty good compromise.

problem is still cost/survivability on a T6 3+ model, even with 6 wounds, in the current gaming environment.

It's a nice combo, but it still doesn't address the Trygon's (or any MC we have) major problem. How do you get him in CC alive?

He has no invul save or FNP, gets ID'd in a whim, and while fleet is nice it will never garantee you a turn 2 assault, which is what you want for assault units. And for 275pnts, that hurts.

DS will only get you shot.

Like I said, I am working on a list where him getting shot isn't a problem. Going to look odd, but it will be the fastest list out there.

It will be a gamblers list. Win big or loose big.

However we do have to stop saying it will never get into CC with so much stuff. If it can't get into CC then it is probably a fault of the list. (no offence, we all need trial and error on our lists)

Man, I played a game where I deep striked 2 Trygons into a Dark Eldar army, they managed to shoot both of them down in their shooting turn, it was appalling. I lost that game bad, one of my worst losses, though the guy I play plays better than me and builds really good lists ...

I think GW see having T6 and W6 as an answer to not having invuln saves in the army but I think it simply doesn't match up as there is too much high STR weaponry for that to save a model ...

and i've seen eldar do that to 3 mawlocks the turn after they poped up, right all 3 dead in the same turn.

which is why i don't get where non tyranid players act like MC's are SOOOOO TOUUUUGHHHH

even though mawlocks seem better, i'm still very hesitant about going all out with them because i'm not ignorant to the massive amount of firepower these armies can put out in one turn along with rerolls to just about everything

Agreed. But for a different reason. Everyone complains that everything somehow gets shot down before it gets into combat, as if opponents can table you with only two turns of shooting.

Tyranids are (finally) cheap now. There are potentially tons of units on the field, yeah, a couple of guys will get shot down, but the goal is to sacrifice those guys so the rest makes it. To improve survivability we have layered mobile cover in the form of gaunts<midbugs<MCs reinforced by venomthropes,catalyst and onslaught and supported by plenty of pinning fire and other stuff that gradually thins out the enemy at range.

It's like people look at any given unit and imagine it running up against an entire army alone.

I don't think this is as good as you say. Compared to swarmlord, you lose ID on all attacks, so at least against monsters Swarmlord will still be more effective. 6 vs 5 wounds... this might seem a win on Trygon's part, but Swarmie has a 4+ INV, which pretty much doubles his survivability in CC, a serious daemon (or prince) will rip trygon to shreds on with higher Initiative. Deepstriking is just a death sentence on such a juicy model, so you are reduced to footslogging just like Swarmlord. Then you lose 3 psychic powers per turn, which is huge.
I'm not convinced.
